Could a New Mitsubishi 3000GT Save the Brand?

Mitsubishi’s struggles are well-documented. But a rebirth of the 3000GT could possibly renew interest in the besieged brand.

I’m not crazy enough to suggest a new 3000GT that’s done well would be an instant sales booster— the rest of the lineup would need to be good, too, especially since a two-door sports coupe with high-end pricing wouldn't sell in volume numbers. But it is an interesting idea, to say the least.

A new 3000GT could get people talking about the brand again. And while no one from Mitsubishi has brought up the idea, at least as far as I can tell, one Carscoops reader, Abdelaziz Dhailia, who hails from the United Arab Emirates, has drawn a rendering that looks as good as any that might come from the factory.

Dhailia based his rendering on the Acura NSX Concept, and that makes sense, as a real 3000GT would compete against that car. The rendering does look cool—I hope Mitsubishi decides to get its act together and build a twin-turbo version that gets the brand back on everyone’s radar. It’s not likely to happen, but hey, you never know.

The way Mitsubishi is going these days, we'll be lucky if we see a heated up SUV in its future, let alone a contemporary 3000GT replacement, but it never hurts to dream, right?

Enter the world of Carscoops reader Abdelaziz Dhailia from the United Arab Emirates, who imagined up a successor to the 1990-2001 Mitsubishi 3000GT, a car that was sold as the GTO in its home market, while also gaining a twin brother in America after Chrysler re-badged it as the 1991-1996 Dodge Stealth.

The 3000GT was one of many commendable lower and higher end sports cars to come out of Japan in the 1990s, ranging from the Mazda MX-5, Honda CR-X II, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO and Nissan 200SΧ, to the original Honda / Acura NSX, Mazda RX-7 Mk3, Nissan 300ZX, Subaru SVX and Toyota Supra Mk4. I know – what an amazing decade that was for Japanese performance cars.

Abdelaziz tells us that he based his rendering of the 2017 Mitsubishi 3000GT on the upcoming 2016 Honda NSX and specifically on the concept. It actually looks a whole lot better than what it sounds.

That idea does sound good, but I think I would agree to the fact that Mitsubishi needs to get back to work as fas as the other vehicles because a new 3000gt may get some attention, that doesnt mean it would bring sales to the other mitsu-lineup. The Carscoop photo is alright but they may went over the top on the door, I mean its not a saleen s7 guys, give it a smoother look.

Don't think it would happen but would be awesome if it did...

I think an upgraded mirage is more likely.

I'd rather see an updated GSX or bring back a starion-esce turbo RWD car basically to compete against the brz, miata, genesis branch.

3000gt would cost too much, I don't think it would sell well, but would definitely be cool to see.

I think it all depends on how well they pull it off. and I think they should give it a different name... I don't think the 3000GT name is worth anything, doesn't exactly have a huge fanboi following like all the other 90's Japanese sports cars... Evo has a much bigger fan base than 3000GT ever did

concept art looks pretty cool, but much more Eclipse than 3000GT

The evo has basically taken over the Mitsubishi flagship performance vehicle position, and I don't see that changing. Perhaps more of an entry level performance vehicle would be more viable. Maybe a coupe, rwd, with a smallish turbo four powering it. Making a new 3000gt, it would have to outperform the evo, which would make it quite expensive, and cost a lot to develope. I know I wouldn't be able to afford it! At least the rwd turbo coupe idea could make some good sales figures if done well. Just make sure it's faster than the frs/brz.

I don't think it could stand up against the NSX, Supra, GTR. Unless it cost significantly less than the aforementioned.

You're forgetting, anything new has to be picked up by third parties. One of the reasons for the evo's success is all the third parties making parts for it to improve it. If only a select few people with the ability/money to fabricate can unlock the potential it won't really matter what it's capable of. Even if it's picked up, it will take time to develop and test new third party parts meaning that it won't see major sales to our niche for quite some time.

I honestly don't get why Mitsubishi didn't overlap their next gen with their current gen, dropping your current before even deciding on your next gen is suicide. I honestly don't expect Mitsubishi to be around much longer. The minimal profit off their econobox cars and their lackluster lineup is going to hurt them big time. The only car they have making headlines is the lolMirage, and while it's a nice car for what it is, it offers basically nothing to the car enthusiast.

Mitsubishi needs to look at what happened to Suzuki. When you don't have cars people are talking about, no one remembers you when they go car shopping. Then no one notices when you're gone.

what's affordable doesn't seem to matter anymore these days. Mostly everyone is buying cars they can't "afford" to begin with. Seems as if everyone is getting approved for loans unless your extremely broke.

I see evo x owners living in some of the worst areas The city, car worth more than they'r house lol. It's a win win for the dealers because if the loan isn't being payed it's repo time anyway. And off to the next poor sap. They never lose a dollar. Point is they price however they want lol
