700r4 trans, it's an overdrive trans that came in Iroc's and Trans Am's, I wouldn't say it's better... it is heavier though. If he has a 350, it could be built up, you never know.

I couldn't find anything on the 1984 Trans Am, but the 1990 (also a 3rd gen) weighed in between 3300-3370lbs, IIRC. An Evo is no light weight, weighing in at 3263lbs without a sunroof, and 3298 lbs with one. Depending on the various trims and modifactions of the vehicles involved, the Evo may have a slight weight advantage or even be at a disadvantage, but it will probably not make up for a large disparity in power or driver skills as the weight difference between, say, a 195 hp Grand Prix GT and a 190 hp Lotus Elise would. The best advice I can give is to go race and post the outcome. That's the only way that you'll really know what is going to happen.

Anyway your right, not the best tranny, but with some of the aftermarket companies I dealt with, I had a built B&M tranny, and an Art Carr built tranny.. neither failed, but I wanted one with a better first gear.

There was one major advantage to the 700r4 and the reason I chose it was the Overdrive, I was able to run 3.73 gears and still had decent highway RPM..

HOWEVER, unless his car is deep into the low 12's I doubt he'll be able to keep up off the line anyway..
I had both.

My A4 '95 Z28 ran 12.7@108 like clockwork. I sold it to a friend and with 50k on the clock, it fried the torque converter and took the 4L60E out with it.

Of course, the car did have over 50 passes on it cutting 1.8 60's.
