Stock evo vs. Trans Am
Stock evo vs. Trans Am
My friend has an 84 Trans Am with a 350 (5.7L) engine, flow master exhaust, Jet Performance chip, shift kit, stall converter (its an auto) and I think thats it, well anyways, he swears up and down that he can OWN a stock evo in a race, I dont know WHO would win..... I have never ridden in an evo but, his car is 4100 pounds and its just......... huge, I told him I think the evo would win, and we havent found an evo to race, so we have never found out the REAL way...... tell me your opinions....... BTW, this is drag race. Thanks.
Well, a trans am with an aftermarket 350 could do pretty well, but if then engine is more or less stock with a TPI setup.. it may see 250hp with an aftermarket exhaust, cam, filter, and hypertech chip..
HOWEVER since its an 84, it could have had Crossfire injection or a 305 with a Carburetor.. the CFI motor stock was 190hp and the 305 was 160.. If the car is more or less stock, but with a new 350 block, you'll win..

I should warn you though.. I had a 83 Z28 with a 350 chevy engine, and a few bolt ons (alot of work done on the car and it was expensive at the time) and I ran in the 12's but it was not with any stock components and the motor was built by a local speed shop..

hehe.. a TH-700R4 its basically a 4 speed auto with overdrive.. has alot of potential but were pretty crappy until about 1988.. These cars need gears to get them out of their own way.. which means with gears they have terrible top end also.

The only nice thing about them is that they're plentiful and cheap.
Ahh, you must have owned a Mustang..
Anyway your right, not the best tranny, but with some of the aftermarket companies I dealt with, I had a built B&M tranny, and an Art Carr built tranny.. neither failed, but I wanted one with a better first gear.
There was one major advantage to the 700r4 and the reason I chose it was the Overdrive, I was able to run 3.73 gears and still had decent highway RPM..
HOWEVER, unless his car is deep into the low 12's I doubt he'll be able to keep up off the line anyway..
