TLDR: The EPA is on the war path. Their interpretation of the Clean air act is that they can go after anyone, including pure motorsport applications. SEMA has put forth a bill to carve out a legal exemption for motorsports. The Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act has passed the house with bipartisan support and is waiting to be taken up by the senate.
This is really not good. It could be the end of a lot of things we all enjoy. Thanks coal rollers.... you couldn't just do your criming discretely. This is why we can't have nice things.

First will be the diesel shops, then they will come for the rest. I'll add all the stories I come across here.

(for the record talking about all politicians not specific to this topic before someone comes in here saying left is better than right or right is better than left)
Environmentalists have a "righteous cause" to fight and lawyers want to make money. Thanks to these court cases they can now hold parts manufacturers liable if their equipment is found on a street vehicle. Without this legislation it could be the end of the automotive performance aftermarket as we know it. This is from the first article i linked and is probably more of a threat than the actions of the EPA directly. You can't run a business with the threat of being sued into oblivion hanging over your head, banks won't loan you money etc...
they don't care about solving problems, they only care about doing what voters can see. everybody see's cars. lowest hanging fruit.

I try to be respectful as fck on the road. Sure, my Evo is loud and relatively quick, but I drive it like I drive my wrangler or outback. I'm not trying to give people an excuse.

^seems like the RPM act only affects competition vehicles. I don't see anything in there to exclude registered street vehicles with aftermarket parts and tampered emissions systems.
I only spent 15 mins looking for this info. Is there something I am missing?

This is more about the aftermarket going out of existence. The only reason any of this stuff exists in the first place is because of the pretext that it won't be used on the street. However, the EPA is saying no vehicle being used for anything period can be modified. There for no reason for the aftermarket to exist.

You should 100% push your representative to vote in favor of the RPM act.
