A stock car is a happy car
I'm planning on doing the rear diff restack so I want to do as much as I can while everything is out..bushings, wheel bearings, etc.
As you know, Seth, my IX is almost stock. It has a boost controller, a big FMIC for consistency, a Works TBE w/cat that's becoming louder and louder, and a STM's killer tune. Maybe a hair over 400hp on a good day. The car was modified during the first few years of ownership, as I learned more and was sure none of this would compromise reliability and drivability. To this day, my Evo is the single most reliable car I've owned. I'm 60yo, BTW.
Read some suspension talk; sounds interesting. I switched to the factory Bilstein suspension when new MR owners would sell them for almost nothing. It's fantastic. If it'll need a replacement, going for essentially the same thing. Also added a set of F/R anti-sway bars. Whiteline's smallest combo and some factory brake cooling guides. It's a killer setup that I've driven through 6 sets of tires and 4 sets of pads in 60K miles. The car just had its first 60K service at STM. No desire to change the setup in any way, shape, or form. Or, install any other mods for that matter. What for? The car runs amazingly, Every time.

I've always been into modifying my cars, but recently, I've found a lot of peace in just enjoying my stock setup. The reliability and the lack of constant tinkering are big pluses. I did splurge on some high-quality tires, and it’s been the perfect middle ground for me. Anyone else here switched back to stock and loving it?
A mostly stock IX can be comfortable up to 350 WHP, which is around 24 PSI peak boost and the supporting mods (intake, exhaust). Once you go above that and start driving hard it puts a exponentially more stress on the clutch, the ACD, transaxle and all of the other mechanical elements that are increasingly more difficult/expensive to repair or replace. I've owned more powerful cars than my Evo, I have fast motorcycles, and I've never once felt like my Evo is too slow sitting around 330 WHP (tuned to 22 PSI). It feels just right. BTW when you are running stock turbo and want to boost reliably you can get a 22 PSI wastegate. This means that it will not open until pressure exceeds 22 PSI, which can help a lot with surging or fluttering.
