Hub Motors one day?

https://www.proteanelectric.com/
So they're heavy right now I think, not sure exactly what fits as friction brakes nor have I found a version/company that does quality regen braking but as dino juice goers outta style is this tech on anyones radar as a neat-o thing to do? Battery tech is changing hard and fast, so are magnets and blah blah blah motors. And parts are getting discontinued friggin farggin froggin FRACK!
Cause no way I K swap my car even if...well, what about with the...no, not worrying about driveline swaps, HUB MOTORS, discuss.

I like what WRC is doing this year. Just need that dual input rear diff and the rest of the drivetrain can stay as is. Another approach might be getting something in series with the driveshaft.

As far as hubs go though, unsprung weight is usually the worst.

Sure, heavy now but what about when they become an integrated hub/motor/brake unit? On Verge motor bikes already, why not cars too?

You could build just as light a package and have it not be un-sprung weight. There where OEM's that dabbled with Hub motors, but that doesn't seem to be the path the industry is going down.

I mean who knows what vehicles will even be like in the future, so I would certainly not say never. Right now though, I don't think it will become a thing for automobiles. Especially considering the condition of infrastructure, hub mount is going to experience way more of the terrible roads.

it’s a bad idea in my book. Besides the weight imagine hitting a monster pot hole and instead of just replacing a wheel and tire you have to replace a motor too. Plus all the suspension parts will have to be super heavy duty to support the extra weight in the wheel/motor assembly, adding more weight in an already heavy electric car

I don't like it either
You want the unsprung weight as light as possible(weight of 1/2 control arms, below spring, knuckle, tyre, brake, ect.) for better handling
This seams to defeat the idea unless its in a vehicle that is not handling oriented. Maybe trucks, buses, minivans, ect.

Its an idea for sure but not for handling performance.

I could see doing something like jaguar did with their brakes mounted on the rear diff.
That would allow the weight to be sprung but have independent motor wheel control.... But tesla motor does this no?
