MotorTrend article on how to clean a throttle body!!

Note: My Evo X had been having rough idle, but OBD2 scanning returned no codes. Therefore, I had been chasing down the cause for a while. Previously, I incorrectly believed that cleaning the throttle body was like snake oil skincare, because the throttle body shouldn't be dirty after all the miles. Now, my mechanic found that my Evo's throttle body, at over 100k miles, while only moderately dirty, definitely needed a cleaning. Thus, he cleaned it, and this alone solved ~75% of the rough idle. My Evo's idle RPM still occasionally fluctuates between 800 ~ 1,000, but the choking and stuttering are gone. As I was learning this, I found the following article very educational, so allow me to share it here:

How to Clean a Throttle Body: Making Things Run Smoother
Cleaning your vehicle’s throttle body regularly can help improve its drivability and performance.

The throttle body controls airflow into an engine. For fuel-injected engines it’s usually housed between the air filter and intake manifold. Keeping this component clean can help your vehicle deliver noticeably smoother performance.

A dirty, grimy, or clogged throttle body can lead to rough idling, poor acceleration, and stalling. Cleaning the throttle body is a simple task that requires no specialized knowledge. You can do it in 10 to 15 minutes.

It's generally recommended that you perform this task every 30,000 miles. Unsteady idling, sluggish acceleration, and trouble shifting while driving are signs that it may be time to clean your throttle body.

Tools and Materials

The tools and materials you need for throttle body cleaning cost little to nothing. These include:

▪ Screwdriver or socket set
▪ Rubber gloves and eye protection
▪ Throttle body cleaning spray
▪ Cleaning brush or toothbrush
▪ Clean rags or paper towels
▪ General-purpose oil
▪ Cotton swabs
▪ Mass airflow sensor cleaner (optional)

Specialized throttle body spray should be available at your local auto parts supply store or the automotive section of a hardware store. You can also use a throttle body cleaner alternative, such as WD-40 or a carburetor cleaner.

Step 1: Locate and Disconnect the Throttle Body

Start by locating the throttle body under the hood. It's the component that’s normally located between the air cleaner and the intake manifold on fuel-injected cars.

If you're unable to identify the throttle body, ask someone to step on the gas pedal while the engine is off. This will cause the throttle shaft to shift noticeably, as it's connected to the accelerator.

After you've located the throttle body, disconnect the battery as a safety precaution and ensure you've turned the engine off.

Remove any hoses and ducts connected to the throttle body. You could label them with masking tape first so that you know which hose to connect to each coupling when you reattach them later.

To remove the air intake tube, use a Phillips or Torx screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. Gently twist and pull the duct until it comes off. Be careful not to disconnect any electrical wires or terminals in the process.

Sometimes, the throttle body has two air intake tubes, one on each side. In this case, you only need to remove one of them to expose the throttle for cleaning.

Step 2: Spray Cleaning Solution

Put on your rubber gloves and eye protection before applying the cleaning solution to the throttle body. This will protect you from the hazardous chemicals in the cleaner.

It's fine to spray the cleaner onto the butterfly valve with the assembly in place. It won't cause debris to fall into the engine as long as you don't overdo it. You need to clean both sides of the valve. If your vehicle has a cable-driven throttle, you can open the valve by hand.

Things get a little trickier with a drive-by-wire throttle body. You can't open the valve by hand, as it can damage the system. Instead, depress the throttle pedal. You can do this by placing something heavy on the gas pedal to keep the valve open or asking someone to step on the pedal.

After applying the cleaner, let it soak for about 10 minutes before cleaning the throttle body.

Step 3: Scrub Away Debris

Follow this guide on how to clean the throttle body without removing it:

1. Gently scrub the inside of the throttle body with a toothbrush to loosen any dirt, varnish, or gum. This is also an effective way to get into hard-to-reach crevices.

2. Use a rag or paper towel to wipe up the residue. If you see any remaining buildup, continue to spray the cleaner, scrub, and wipe until the metal is clean and bare.

3. Be careful to avoid getting cleaner on the sensors during the cleaning process and clean up any liquid or residue that may have spilled onto any of the surrounding components, such as the engine.

4. When you've finished cleaning, lightly lubricate the throttle shaft to ensure smooth movement. Use a cotton swab to apply a small drop of general-purpose oil at the points where the shaft enters the throttle body.

Step 4: Clean the Mass Airflow Sensor (Optional)

The MAF sensor ensures proper airflow into the engine. It can help your vehicle run more smoothly and deliver better gas mileage.

Here's how to clean the throttle body sensor:

1. Locate the MAF sensor. This is a small black square box between the throttle body and the air filter box. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove each of the screws securing the sensor to your car.

2. Hold the straw of the MAF cleaner around 4 inches away from the silver wire or plate of the MAF sensor. Spray 10 to 15 times or as many as it takes to make the wire or plate sparkle.

3. Let the cleaner air-dry for one hour and reinstall the MAF sensor.

Step 5: Reassemble and Test

Use the labels you made earlier to correctly reconnect the hoses and ducts to the throttle body. Double-check all connections and tighten each clamp securely.

After you've put everything back in place, start the engine and let it idle for several minutes. Then, take your car for a test drive to see if there's any difference in its drivability and performance.

Tips for Best Results

Follow these tips to get the best results from throttle body cleaning:

▪ Use a quality cleaning solution from a reputable brand.
▪ Avoid over-spraying into the throttle body.
▪ Allow the engine to run for a few minutes after reassembly.
▪ Clean your throttle body every 30,000 miles or as needed.

You need to be careful with cleaning the throttle body as some of them have coatings (that look like grease) but actually need to be there for the throttle body to work properly. I discovered this the painful way on my Evo IX since it has a coating on the backside of the throttle plate that works to seal the butterfly to the barrel of the body. When I accidentally cleaned the coating away the car would idle at 1200 RPM even with the BSS screw at its maximum adjustment. The places that would rebuild the Evo throttle bodies no longer offer that service so I had to do the research and find the coating on my own and redo it. Glad to see that cleaning it worked for you but just remember to be careful as not all car are the same for the ability to clean it.

Cleaning the throttle body for an Evo 8/9 is best done with an ultrasonic cleaner.

I have cleaned the Throttle Body for an Evo X with an ultrasonic cleaner but I wouldnt recommend it for everyone. There is going to be someone that says they stuck it in there and now it doesnt work anymore because they didnt dry it out.

B12 Chemtool and other carb cleaners do dissolve carbon but I find it tedious work compared to just using the ultrasonic machine.
