jetta, and um...passat is bigger, its like comparing galant and lancer, accord with civic, it kinda depends on what you're going to do with it, fully tuned with luxury? i'd get the passat, fits more people too
i'm better off with a golf, or the r32 than getting the jetta

As far as being able to tune either 1.8t engines, they are identical engines. Since I can't answer that the ECU is the same, there maybe some differences in fuel curves and ignition timing. I would agree with insomniac evo, if its an option I would go with the R32 or GTi. But if it was between the Jetta and Passat. I'd go with Jetta, Passats are bad ***, but they are pretty big.

im actually posting for a friend who is trying to decide between the two, i know a kid that has a passat with a few mods and an apr chip that gives him 215hp @ 246tq at the wheels, i told my friend i'd go with the older style passat, he hates the hatch backs and refuses to listen to me but o well..... im saying like a 99 1.8t passat

I have a 01.5 Passat for a daily driver. If you don't mind not having a German built VW and some extra spaces, I'd go with the Jetta. The Passat handles like a boat and doesn't have as much aftermarket parts.

the new Jetta is very very very very nice. Yum.

But it really depends on what you're going after, like insominac_evo said.
