Does anyone else think NA power is "cooler" than FI?

btw snarlynx, i agree i would rather not modfy a low hp car for n|A casue there nothing much to play with in regards to power until you begin losing weight and become louder....and taking my intereior out is out of the question, wtf would i? its my dailydriver, im no poser trying to race every geo metro out there! and theres no purpose in doing so, i understand if the daily driver is tracked and modding accordingly on track days... but for everyday use, its ridiculous......

thats what the big boys are for, remember taht saying sir? "no replacement for displacement"

when you run out of displacement then Fi that *****, then youll have a beast to play with!

An N/A motor in a light car can be a fun package, but nothing that anyone would ever call a beast.

My 98 Integra type-r was a hell of a lot of fun and really, really quick on the track. Over 8g grand it sounded like a sport bike. Super cool package, but if you tuned it for 50 more hp it would loose a lot of the fun. A turbo car will do 50hp without breaking a sweat.

I have always liked the feeling of a well-tuned carbureted big block. This is a pic of my all-time favorite.

No replacement for displacement...

Driving an S2000, I love NA power... but I love the feeling of turbo boost (not to mention the sounds)... They both have their perks.

Au contraire..

There's no replacement for displacement, except technology.

I used to have a 440 under the hood of an old chrysler. put out about 500HP to the rear tires without a supercharger. LOVE the sound of that car, it ROARED like crazy. what was so insane though that I can never get over is that even if you stood 20 or 30 feet behind the
car the exhaust was so strong it would brush against your legs hard, the thing was a beast.

and it all cost me about 2000$CA to put together back when I was a kid. =) and some beer to pay off the backyard mechanics.

Technology is not a replacement for displacement, it is only a cheap substitute. You can make "almost" the same power as you would be able to on a larger displacement engine, but you will NEVER replace the POTENTIAL of a larger displacement engine with technology, b/c all things being equal, technology on a large displacement engine will make MORE power than that same technology on a smaller displacement engine.

Thus, there still is no replacement for displacement.

alex_alex - I agree with you, except I'd point out that technology is an expensive substitute. More displacement and forced induction are cheap & easy ways to get more horsepower/torque. Extracting large power from a small NA motor usually requires a fair number of expensive parts - stronger and lighter internals, extra labor to smooth air/fuel flow, more R&D time to get the right piston shape, etc.

i agree with NA engines having a much more linear and broader torque curve.
Eh? Go drive a GT3 and then a 911 Turbo back to back. The GT3 is a great car for a lot of reasons, but the power delivery reminds me of an S2000. Not a car you want to drive on the street all the time. The turbo on the other hand has a large wave of torque available from 2000 on up to redline.

You say that like it's a bad thing!

I seriously wonder what the hell people do when they drive. I can short shift my S2000 (shifting at <4000) and out-accelerate 95% of the drivers on the road. Yet everyone whines that it has no low-end power for daily driving? How much friggin power do you need to accelerate to the next red light when you're behind soccer-moms and gray-hairs?

NO, I don't care. I look at a motor based on it's own merits.
I love an LS1 or 6 as much as I like a 4G63 turbo.
