Lightbulb Last of the V8 Interceptors

This thread is a repost of Chris's fine Mad Max page!

http://www.users.fl.net.au/~chris/madmax.htm

For those of you who are too young to know who or what Mad Max was, first of all, I'm way jealous, second of all, probably the best highway and off-road driving movie of all time. There must have been a godzillion Italian and Mexican wannabe movies that spun-off from this Aussie original. I thought Easy Rider was the bomb! Then Mad Max made me realize how much fun a man can have with a car, in a wide open space, especially if he's got a bunch of homeys with him and they've got modified rides too.

Check it out:

Mad Max is an Australian Movie made in 1979, staring Mel Gibson and directed by George Miller. It is set in a time of decaying order and violent highways. Max a police pursuit driver is drawn into a path of vengeance after a motorcycle gang targets him for the death of their former leader.

In the U.S. the Aussie accents were dubbed over. The sequel to Mad Max was originally titled The Road Warrior but is now known as Mad Max 2.

The car that Max drives (the ``last of the V8 interceptors'') is a production car, the Ford XB Falcon Hardtop, sold in Australia from December 1973 until August 1976. The car in the film had a standard 351 cubic inch (5.8 litre) V8 motor.

The stolen interceptor driven by the Nightrider in the opening scenes is another production vehicle, it is a HQ Holden Monaro which was sold in Australia in the early 70's with a variety of motors including large capacity V8's. Also the other police vehicles in the movie were sedan versions of the XB, although one was the previous model ``XA'' They also had 351 CI motors and are a common car on Australian roads.

The Mad Max car was outfitted with a supercharger but it was fake casing over a working carburettor. Other modifications included the square headlights, nose cone and roof spoiler from a XC Falcon panel van first used by Ford in a show car. In Mad Max 2, two large fuel tanks were placed in the back.

Once Mad Max 2 was completed all the cars were sent to a wreckers yard, (after having invested $35,000 building it). A collector discovered and restored it to original condition. The original black Interceptor appeared in car shows and museum displays across Australia. It is now believed to be in a museum in the UK. The second car (possibly a fake) is on permanent display in Sydney Australia, in the Planet Hollywood restaurant. When they were building the restaurant they had to lower the car in through the roof using a crane.

Classic Quotes:

[The Kid is handcuffed to a car that's about to explode.]
Max: These cuffs are made of tensiled steel. It would take you ten minutes to hack through them. [Hands Kid the hacksaw.] If you're quick, and if you're lucky, you can hack through your ankle in five.

-----

Fifi Macaffee: They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well, damn them! You and me, Max, we're gonna give 'em back their heroes!

Booyah, a newer Falcon has just been released - engine options include a 4.0 litre 6 cylinder twin cam 24 valve turbo motor that pulls 13-second quarter miles, and the 5.4 litre V8 from the Mustang, except with a twin cam head which you guys don't get yet!

TWO MAN ENTER! ONE MAN LEAVE!

While I like the Mad Max series, you got to admit, it is quite possibly one of the most incomprehensible movie series ever made. I mean, it is just.... well, wierd.

Interesting fact from "Beyond Thunderdome," in one of the final scenes, Tina Turner drives a semi. The semi was a one of a kind fabrication that basically had a transplanted, rigged automatic transmission due to the fact that Tina couldn't drive a standard, and production time didn't allow time for her to learn (while it allowed for fabrication time? Moviemakers are wierd.).
