Unhappy Help, Need Advice: Tranny Problems (long post)

Ok,

I was going to post this on dcevoclub, but since it's down i'll try here... and post up there later.

Anyhow, I just came from mitsubishi with some bad news. I went in cuz I felt some gears grinding, jumping out of gears and general notchiness and howling in higher rpm when I let off the gas. The Evo tech that took my car said he could only reproduce the howling, which is good I guess. However, the howling he could reproduce and said that it sounds like my input shaft bearing is worn and also mentioned that my clutch is pretty much shot.

Here comes my problem. I'm on the stock clutch with just over 40k and I have mods.

before anyone touches on this, i REALLY LIKE this dealership/shop and i mean them no disrespect or ill intent, i'm just looking for advice from evo guys in the area. i do not want to entertain posts of "get a lawyer" or anything in that vein (well, maybe against mitsu but i dont want to involve the shop). they've been really good to me and I like going there. i'm just looking for advice and possibly a name of a reputable shop that costs less than the dealership.

anyway, i have no doubt that they at the shop would fix this for me under warranty if they could; as it stands, their DSM almost definitely wouldn't let them (he tried denying tranny work for a BOV). My power mods are: TBE, buschur standard FMIC, AMS LICP and hallman mbc. Pretty basic stuff and I doubt (as the shop does) that they really affected the bearing. The worn clutch could have possibly played a role in it, I don't know, and they'd have to tear it down to find out. However, if they try to get it by as warranty work, their relationship with the DSM would almost definitely be shot and their work on other evos with things like synchros would all go under a magnifying glass.

They estimated the bill would be something like 2k and then on top of that I'd probably pretty much have to get a clutch since it really would be the logical time to get that done, so we're looking at like 2600 all together. Anyone that knows just how cheap I am could tell you that this is NOT an entertaining situation for me.

i'm considering contacting the DSM and speaking to him about it and not involving the dealership or just going straight to another shop.

I'd really appreciate any advice or names of shops you guys could offer

Check out the information on the reverse idler gear assembly TSB. You may or may not be able to fit under it. I've used Rockville Mitsu without any complaints and if DCEVO comes back up many people have gotten a lot of help for Alexandria Mitsu for work.
