Illegal Tint & Unapproved Exhaust?

I recently made the big move from san diego to virginia beach virginia. As i was sitting at a stop light a cop pulls next to me and as soon as its green hes flashing his lights at me. Long story short i got hit for ilegal tint and unaproved exhaust. my car is up to par with the california standards and i have california license plates as well as license. he used a meter or some sort that told him my tint allows 6% light in the back and 43% in the front and he didnt say anything about my exhaust but "its too loud, the state of virginia does not allow aftermarket exhaust". being to loud maybe because my car had been in like 43 degree weather and just turned on but i was stopped..... it wasnt that loud can anyonehelp? any ideas suggestions or anything?

Virginia cops are pretty strict about aftermarket exhaust and as for the tint I believe you're only allowed to have the back windows tinted 35% and front 50%. I assume you're allowed darker tints in CA because it's much sunnier out there. You might have to change the tinted windows and as for the exhaust, slap the stock back on and have them sign off on it. Probably put the aftermarket exhaust back on but beware of getting pulled over again for it.

cop just felt like being a ***** I guess. The tint I can see but 1 out of every 5 cars in VA has aftermarket exhaust.. make the tints legal or close to it. I wouldnt worry to much about the exhaust personally.

i appreciate your input and yes my windows are much darker, in ca the driver and passenger.. i dont remember exactly but mine allows 43% in the front according to mr police mans dealy jig and the back allows 5% which in ca the back windows can be as dark as you please. And as for the exhaust well i went to pick it up with my suv cause i didnt want a greasy exhaust pipe all over my car so i had a sheet layed down and everything and when i got to the place he said "i thought you didnt want it to i tossed it". so its probably scrap metal in ca somewhere

The cop is being an a-hole about the exhaust. Check what the states db levels are and go to your local radio shack and get a db meter. If you are under the state limit (most states are 95db) at 3000 rmp you don't have to change your exhaust.

Yup, if you can prove that your exhaust is under the VA db limit, then you can fight and beat that ticket in court. No state has a law stating that aftermarket exhausts are illegal, because OEM isn't always available for cars that need a new one due to rust or an accident.

Your car has CA plates on it and he grabbed you for illegal tints? That's f'ed up... just tell him your visiting... From what my dad says, cops in MA aren't encouraged to pull over out of state vehicles for illegal exhaust and tint, because their cars are registered out of state and follow different laws... and MA is a ***** about rules... I say fight it...

my buddy is stationed in washington and just had his jeep shipped up there from southern california. so far he has gotten a ticket for tint, no front plate, loud exhaust (has a single chamber flowmaster on it) and he gets crap for his tires sticking out of his wheelwells too far. the thing has a 4 1/2" long arm kit on it and 33x12.50 tires and they stick out about 3" from the wheelwell and he had to go out and spend 500$ on bigger fender flares just so they would leave him alone.

ive been pulled over for exhaust before. cop let me go because he had better thigns to do than write a $20 fix it ticket.

From someone who has lived in VA his whole life

Hey man, hope your enjoying the beach, its not that great but it works. As for the cops in VA, they aren't all trying to be an a**hole its just the way they are taught to handle things. My friend is a State Trooper and VA has no real exhuast law, so there is no way you can fight it with a Db reading. It states, that anything other than OEM exhaust equipment is illegal, regardless of sound, or emissions. A lot of people tried to petition it, but it got nowhere. The only thing i can tell you is, get a shop to sign that you had the stock exhaust put back on, and try to hide the exhuast within your bumper. If they cant see it they will rarely pull you over. But be careful, because if you get two tickets within 6 months both for exhaust they will put you on probation. They are really bad on Interstate. Every cop that has ever pulled me over, whips out the gun to check tint, and after they find out im 1% over legal, they go back to the car, sit a while, and then because they are mad come back and give me an exhuast ticket, so I just quit driving my other car around. Best of luck with the ticket, but there isn't really any way of getting out of the exhaust ticket in virginia. Also neons, any altered suspension products, and headers are illegal in VA, just a heads up. Good luck with everything bro, and try and stay away from the cops, lol.

I got stopped for tint as well, the cop was very pleasant though. Asked where I had it done (was done by the dealer, one of the best known in our state) and when he checked it with that gadget it was fine we're allowed 35% on the front (I scraped in at 34.8 :P) and I forget what it was allowed at the back but it was 18% on mine and he said that was fine.
Had a good chat with him too... then got the usual 'just watch your speed it looked like you went through that corner a bit too quick'. Haven't been stopped in a while, doing my best to be a good boy.
Some cops can be real a$$es though. I guess thats the same wherever you live

In PR tint is only allowed on the sides and the minimum is 35%, lower than that is a $100 fine. For exaust, the fine is $150. They dont care for aftermarket or replacement, in its sound loud they will pull you out.

Altered suspension is legal in VA. There are just limits to how low/high the bumbers are allowed to be. I ran across that law when trying to fight a ticket I got back in December.
