I live in Maryland and in the two weeks since adding my carbon fiber hood and trunk I have been pulled over 2 times because of my exhaust. The first time the cop told me it was because it was too loud, even though I was going less than 25mph and under 3500 rpms. I have a custom turbo back exhaust with a cat and in the past 6 months haven't had any problems. The second time I got pulled over I was again going less than 25mph at low rpms. This cop wrote me a citation stating that any after market exhaust is illegal, which is simply not true. The MD law states:

a) A person may not modify the exhaust system or any other noise abatement device of a motor vehicle driven or to be driven on any highway in this State in such a way that the noise emitted by the vehicle exceeds that emitted by the vehicle as originally manufactured.

(b) A person may not drive on any highway in this State a motor vehicle with an exhaust system or noise abatement device modified in a way prohibited by subsection (a) of this section.

Has anyone had similar problems in MD and what did you do to get around it? I was thinking about either getting another muffler setup, resonator or perhaps just painting it black. I really don't want to spend the money on a whole new exhaust setup. Would love to hear what works. Thanks.

 

Since I've had my evo (11/04), never have I been pulled over. I work out in Frederick, is this where you've been getting pulled over? I haven't had any issues in that area either. I've only read about it some parts of VA.

 

Yeah, it just appears to be the Frederick City Police downtown. Never had any problems elsewhere in the area.
