Bung Welding
Bung Welding
I talked to AMS about welding a bung on a down pipe for a wideband installation. They said that they need the pipe for a day or two! Give me a break...it's a 15 min job.
Is there anyone in the northwest burbs that can weld (TIG) stainless the same day?

I had Fall Line Motorsports TIG a stainless bung into my pipe today. Nice guys and the weld is a work of art. Exhaust Works doesn't have a TIG or stainless wire for their MIG.

Not really, but I did call the day before and made sure there would be someone with time to do it while I waited.
I'm planning to get my car up on their dyno sometime soon. I like what I saw when I walked around their facility.

what downpipe do you have, mine came with a 02 bung already welded on....makes it real nice. The location of the bung is near the factory 02 sensor, so it makes it easy for wiring. You could run the wiring where the factory wiring run through...just my 2 cents

There is a shop in villa park on north ave. they are next to E&R performance. Walk in since I was next door buying methanol and they took me right away for 20 dollars to tig weld. The shop deal with fabricating custom bike and domestic car, it just open last year. Forget AMS, they want to charge me 50 dollars and make an appointment 2 week in advance?
ok this is how things get out of hand Its $15 for a stainless steel bung and plug and $35 to weld it in. AMS has a very tight production schedule and it very hard to stop the assembly line for a bung. if you drop it off we can fit it in durring a down period. its nothing personal but with the vollume we have ship out here in any given day I have to think of the big picture. the $680 for the cam and stud install is WAY out of line please research a little bit before you go starting a rumor about a company. we charge $310 for a cam and head stud install. that is less that HALF of what you are claiming. Sorry if we could not install it right away but I have to keep up with orders and if that means requiring a customer to drop off a pipe for up to 48 hours for a bung install I have to do it. If we can service you at all in the future please do not hesitate to ask.

Guys please take your AMS issues and accusations (install costs, etc) somewhere else. It is now clear that AMS's fabrication facility is more or less dedicated to production of product, not walk in business. That fact wasn't made clear to me in my interactions with AMS.
I've done walk in buisness with ams in the past, I guess the difference is that the buisness I was there for didn't require time from a fabricator or a technician whose time is booked out ahead of time with projects.
I wouldn't walk into any car shop with expectations of getting anything done without an appointment. Let's face it, fabricators & technicians aren't cheap per hour by any means. It's smart to ensure that if they're on the clock they're booking time. If that means planning their schedule 'tight' so be it. Furthermore I think it's good that if they're going to be taking on work they schedule or plan for it, Its the intelligent and professional way to do it.
It doesn't matter if its fifteen minutes of fifteen seconds. The bottom line is that taking a fabricator or technician off of the the job they're tasked with doing for that time. That fifteen minutes could be the difference between a customer who was told they could pick up a product at the end of a day recieving it or waiting another day.
You're not dealing with pepboys or lube pros here.

You know I did call for an appointment and the result was as cited above ("leave the pipe and we will get to it in 48 hours). I shouldn't have called it "walk in business".
What I was looking for was anyone who could do the job with the correct tools and commit to a time to conduct the work. If a shop can't schedule a short job any better than within a 48 hour window, then I guess you know the result.
