So I've managed to get 3 tinted window tickets in the past 24 hours while being parked. Aren't tints legal in Illinois?! What's your guys experience?

 

I thought its legal too now as long as its 35 percent or higher visibility. But I could be just hearing things from people.

 

Your tint is probably too dark.

 

i have 5% all the way around on my evo and never once been harassed but then again im in rockford but i am out in shaumburg alot but ive never been stopped for it (knock on wood)

 

it is legal in illinois, i have 5% and i dont get harrased but chicago is different there has been a lot of issues with them giving tickets to people well within the limits and thats all i know about it

 

If I remember right the tint law in Illinois is 35% all around (no windshield of course). If 30% is in the rear, the front can only be at least 50%. If the rear is less than 30%, no front tints are allowed.

So if you got 3 tickets in one day, you're probably illegal.


edit*: just wanted to clarify windshield tints. It's only legal up to 6" from the top.

The front windows have to be a light tint. The others can be a dark as you want. Hell you can spray paint them black if you want. Well maybe now I'm getting carried away.

 

its 35 all around is legel but if you get anything darker in the back the front cant be tinited. chicago dont want to give up that law because it a big monay maker for them somewhere in the millions a year for them. most places have backed off on tint.

 

This is actually correct but I thought if you go darker than 35 in the rear you can still tint the front but it has to be the lightest tint.

 

here is the IL statute (625 ILCS 5/12-503). basically, you need to fall into one of these categories:

(1.) 35% all around except for the windshield (of course)

(2.) 30-35% in the rear and up to 50% front

(3.) anything below 30% tint in the rear, you cannot have front tint

(4.) MPV's with factory installed privacy glass (smoked) are allowed to have up to 50% in front

Cops do not have tint meter to distinguish the difference between tints. I have been researching that they are ticketing cars even with legal tint using the "home rule" as justification for their actions.

 

It's legal in Illinois but illegal in Chicago. If you show up in court, they won't even listen to you (happened to a friend in court last friday). If you have a receipt of the work done showing it's legal contesting the ticket then you might get away with it (a friend mailed in a receipt and the ticket was dropped). So without a receipt, you owe them $250.

 

in chicago you cannot have any tints in front.. any other area outside of chicago in illinois is 35% legal all the way around

 

funny,i was reading this a couple day ago,last night i got a ticket for tinted windows+loud exhaust,with court appearance required.
i took the tint in front of the cops but they wouldn't dismiss it..
they really dont like tinted windows lol
