SCCA: Learning Curve--Impressions

I think me and the evo guys had a lot of fun here today, this is a great event so far! The instructors are very professional and technical when it comes to autocrossing. I definately improved my driving skills over this 9 hour period!!

Im not sure if this is a hoax or not, but i was competitive with many of the cars out there. My best run was 29.270 which was pretty darn competitive overall. Just ask the Lexus IS guy or the SRT4 guys or the TT guy or the WRX guys or the Evo guys. My instructor was very surprised also lol. Now they all have to step it up a notch because they are getting beaten or challenged by an OZ Lancer with a strut bar and Falken Azenis..no other performance mods...oh and by the way, it's automatic.

Now I know that the first day isnt really a competition, but everyone was going at it pretty hard and I'm just so happy with the tires. I truly believe they have stepped up my car a notch and also made my driving skills a lot better.

There will be some pics to come tomorrow and you'll definately hearing more of me tomorrow when we really get at it tomorrow!
-Bob

I have to agree 100% with Bob, this class was an incredible time, and it was great to meet a few of you Evo/Lancer guys and a whole bunch of other car freaks of all types! My partner was an SRT-4 guy, he was pulling some awesome times. Bob you were lookin pretty quick out there when I was working in the last heat, lifting the rear inside tire, really nice. I can't wait to see the final times on the SCCA site.

I'm curious to see where me and "Stockfornow" netted out, he had me by a few hundreths of a second at the end of his heat, ("cough" "xede" "cough").
Anyway, it couldn't have been more fun, I hope I can make a real event sometime soon.

Yea the second day was kick ***! Although I missed my last run because of the rain! (That rain was incredible tho) Anyways, my best run of the day was a clean 52.986. I think I made my instructor proud lol. He was a cool guy, he definately looked like the son from American Choppers..

Anyways, this is seriously a kick *** class. Really worth the 100 bucks! I finally know how to drive my lancer to the fullest. I know its limits and can predict how it will react in certain situations. I cant wait to autox again!!

Anyways, Nate, what was the class you ran with and the index time assigned to that class (the multiplier)? Im in HS and the multiplier was 0.776 i believe, which sets me at a 41.115 i believe i hope i came close to the top. But this two day event wasnt all about competition, it was more about learning so it's nothing to worry about. But the next autox ill be sure to step it up even more.. Man the last two days of spring break was fun!!

EDIT: Nate, did you see my 3rd run? I was running solo for the first time on that one and that was my fastest run. How did the car look compared to others? Did i look more aggressive/out of control or did it seem smoother than others? And how bad was the body roll from what you saw? And which turn did the rear wheel lift up?

sorry about all the questions but ive been wondering for a while. I think im gonna make someone my video ***** next time i go autox so i can see myself run from the outside hehe.

You were looking really good, very in control, and you were using the body roll to your advantage, I think that's the key, making the car pitch in the right direction at the right time. Your rear wheel lifted any time you hit the brakes hard and dove into a turn, just like the SE-Rs were doing. You could tell you had those sticky tires on there cause you were stuck to the course.
Nice time by the way! I knew you were up there.
Unfortunately I am in Street A stock (SAS) with corvettes, vipers and what nots, but I hear they may drop the Evo down to B next year.
PS: Look here for the results whenever they are posted:

Totally agree, that was the bargain of the century. The Chicago SCCA did a great job over the whole weekend, they only had a couple glithces that were cleared up quickly.

The EVO is awesome for solo2, makes the driver better than he/she really is as a rookie. But it's so good you wouldn't need to do much if anything to be competitive as a more experienced driver. Better tires (yes better than Advans), and I think the rear strut tower brace, because I hate understeer.

You gotta watch what you do to the car though, before you know it you are in class of cars that are REALLY high performace driven by very experienced drivers.

And yes, although I did womp your *** Nate my @49.8 was not as good as your @49.9 because my car is a bit faster with the Vishnu 0+ setup, so your run was actually faster if you think about it. You did a great job with the stocker.

Bob I saw 2/3 of your second run (I think) standing near the start area, and from where I was standing it looked controlled and fast. Looking at your best time, you are fast, no two ways about it.

Sorry I missed that rain at the track, I saw that crap coming in and I headed for home. It was raining so hard at times I almost had to pull over.

Hope to see you all on April 4th. Thanks, Jerry.

Hey guys,
Here are the results by class, with students and instructors combined:
http://www.scca-chicago.com/solo/200...t0_results.pdf
Jerry, you and me were 10th and 11th overall in street tire stock! I wonder how many of 1-9 were instructors?
And check it out, I had a clean 49.805 too! I could swear you had a few hundreths on me, but we apparently tied! One thing I don't get, what's that number underneath our adjusted time mean?
I'll probably be seeing you guys at next weekend's event, I got wife-clearance!

The results posted have errors in them (see below).
Btw, this was taken from chicagoautox group on yahoo.

"To all students who might see these results, please note that many of you are listed in the wrong class due to catastrophic computer error. If your class shows as UNK or Unknown, you have been given an index of 1.0 (i.e. no performance equalization by the computer) so your position in the overall listing will be artificially poor and your position if in Street Tire class will also be inaccurate. Please don't get discouraged by these results. They do show the raw times you ran but are not in any way accurate as to your classing and performance in comparison to the other competitors.

BTW, I think this was one of the best groups of students to date. I was impressed by the driving I saw by many and see some potential National contenders in the works (to go with the significant number we already have!)

See you all on Sunday (Is it at Rt66 or the Speedway?)

John Moore"

[Shameless plug for TSSCC ON]

You could sign up for TSSCC event on April 18 which will be run at Rt. 66 too. TSSCC is another local club that delivers great auto-x events and this years locations are far better than last years. Rt. 66 is the best one we have and the group of people that run TSSCC will amaze you in hospitality and friendliness.
I know that since i'm one of them

For more info, full schedule and how to register click here.

sounds good, u guys may also want to check out MSCC (www.MadisonAutocross.com) this is where i participated in last season. They seem to be a little more laid back. From what I've seen, you get in more runs too. SCCA events have a limit of 170 people and they usually fill up completely. With MSCC, the most i've seen was 130, and other times were 100 and 80 some people. I think im going to be running with all three this year tho!! Thanks for the info on TSSCC!

Wow bob, you rock!! I knew you looked faster than you were placed, but I didn't see where the error happened. Congrats! Yeah, I emailed the reg folks to try and get in, and i might just head down there at the buttcrack of dawn on Sunday to see if I can get in anyway. Otherwise I'm down for the TSSCC event, Bartek, thanks for the heads up!
