Bilstein Suspension for EVO-V anb VI

Hi guys!

Please help another Mitsubishi owner. I am considering adapting an adjustable Bilstein PSS9 EVO-V suspension to my Dodge Stealth (same car as 3000GT or GTO). My friend can get me a good deal on those.

I need some help from EVO-V or VI owners. I need to get some basic measurements of the stock front struts and I am willing to provide some compensation for your efforts. If you have a stock front strut lying around, that is even better. I will pay you to ship it to me and back plus some $$$ to make it worth your while.

If you have any information on Bilstein PSS9, like at least spring rates please let me know. If you are interested in getting one for your EVO-V or VI car, I will find out the exact pricing.

Thanks!

Depending on how flush you are, call either Guy Ankeny (www.ankenyracing.com) for custom Penske units or Steve Haveness (www.amfmotorsports.com) for custom Ohlins units. Cost should run between $3k and $7k depending on the spec you choose to run. But they will work - really, really work.

Thanks for the advice, but my goal here is to create something new and not buy something off-the-shelf (even if it is custom). I can adapt Ohlins, Penske, or other Bilstein shocks myself. It is just I see this opportunity to adapt the PSS9 and end up with just as great suspension for half the price.

No they won't - not even close :-)

Based on my experience with Bilstein it will be be dollar-for-dollar.

Not to denigrate Bilstein, not at all, but they're building to the lowest common denominator. If you trying that hard to drop the cost I'm sure KYB or Munroe offer something suitably inexpensive.

We are getting off the topic here. It just happened that I am able to get very good shocks at a great price. Now, I just need someone to tell me some EVO-V or VI shocks dimensions. Anyone?

Claudius,

These are the dimensions that I need (in the order of importance):

A) Tab spacing. Mine is 25.5 +/- 0.5 mm.

B) Depth of the tabs from the center of the holes. Mine is 19 mm.

C) Spread of the tab holes. Mine is 70 mm.

D) Height of the assembled coilover from the mounting surface to the lowest tab hole. Mine is 520 mm.

E) Hight of a fully extended bare strut from the bottom of the threaded rod end to the lowest tab hole. Mine is 480 mm.

E') Height of a fully compressed bare strut, which is supposed to be E minus stroke. Please verify this too if possible. Mine is 330 mm.

F) Height of the strut cylinder body. Mine is 320 mm.

THANKS!!!

WOW! Thanks, Claudius!

What did you mean "A is 22 mm inner and (34 mm outer)"? My tabs are straight and parralel to each other with 25.5 mm between them.

Sounld like I will have to think someting up regarding the tab spacing.

And is the difference between E and F 270/305 mm Fr/Rr? This does not sound possible. We are talking about a compact sedan suspension travel. These numbers usually do not exceed 150 mm. Could you please clarify? Thanks.

I'm sorry to stick my nose in again, I do apologise, but what makes you think that the damping rates for an EVO would be anywhere close to what's needed for a 3k/S ? Do you have the ability to revalve and rebuild a Bilstein ? It's not easy, really it's not, not at all...I have a set of user-revalvable Bilsteins that were not supplied by Bilstein - it was not a pleasant process, not at all. It would have been cheaper to go the Ohlins route (though not my suggested Penske route) in the first place.

You're just as likely to end up with an evil-handling pig as anything else. You can't just bolt stuff on simply because it appears vaguely to be a mechanical match.

Apologies for intruding,
Charles

Those PSS9 are supposed to be a little stiffer than the stock EVO-V shocks. They are also adjustable. They might be just good enough for a street 3/S car exactly the way they are.

The most important thing is that my friend owns a suspension shop and he works with Bilstein shocks. He benchmarked a few shock upgrades that are available for my car and he will revalve those PSS9 exactly the way I want them!
