Pads for street use

Okay, my brakes are gone at just under 42k (yes, the original OEM pads). I have a bit of wear on the rotors, but no grooves so I think they're ok. This is for normal street use only so I'm looking for quiet, low dust pads. From reading around a bit it looks like Hawk HPS would be about right, but I'm open to other suggestions. Also, I'd like to get new "organic" shims like the stockers (like I said, I want 'em quiet) do any of the vendors carry those? In fact, what'd be great is if anyone has a package deal (pads, shims, and grease) so I can just order from one place.

I have the Hawk HPS and love them. If you have 42k miles and still on stock rotors...id highly suggest investing in new slotted ones.

I replaced my factory brakes at 32k with Hawk HPS and still have them and the factory rotors at 46k with no problems. I would recommend them for street use. Compared to stock the HPS give off no brake dust at all also.

Yep still on the stock rotors, I learned a long time ago to be gentle on the brakes. How much wear can the the rotors tolerate? If I get the same kind of longevity out of the new pads, you may have a point as it will be quite a while before I need to replace them again.

I've seen some mention of the Hawk ceramic pads, are those different than the HPS?

The only thing about the rotors is if you throw on new pads and your rotors go, your going to want to get new pads again. This is because when you throw on pads with your rotors now..if they are warped or warn down, your pads will mold to the shape of the rotors. When you replace the rotors, the pads are all off and your brakes wont be as productive and will wear your pads down quicker.

About the pads...im not sure about a difference but im on my second set of Hawk HPS's and dont plan on using any others.

well, dont expect the Hawk's to be quiet. they are one of the noisiest pads out there for the evo. and no, the squealing is not caused by installed error.
plus, they have a terrible cold bite, and fade rather quickly (not as quick as stock)

for the BEST oem brake like performance, with high fade resistance, less brake dust and no noise EVER, go with the ferodo ds2500 brake pads.

they are $275 shipped, while the hawks are about $175 shipped.

Those shims you refer to are seemingly hard to find by themselves. I've been re-using the ones from my original stock pads. Get yourself a decent size THIN putty knife or scraper and pop off the shims from your old pads. They're only glued on and will come off if you pry gently with the tools I mentioned. Then they should be able to be re-used with new pads.

As for pads, I've used both Endless SS-S and Ferodo ds2500. The Endless pads were good, but pricey. I really like the Ferodos. Hope this helps.

I love the DS2500 for street use as well, but like all pad/rotor combo's, there are some trade off's. The DS2500's not only dust, they give off huge amounts of a very obvious reddish/brown dust. If you want great bite and near track level performance (at much lower "street" temps), the 2500's are great.

I also have the Hawk HPS pads on the front, and I can tell you they are very noisy. They also produce very little brake dust, so I guess you can say it's a trade off. I also agree that the cold bite isn't very good, but they don't fade too bad. I think for the $ there hard to beat. Maybe I'll try the Ferodo next...

im sorry but im gonna have to disagree with u 110%.... unless u got the hawk reds... the green pads are WAY less dusty and squeaky then ferrodo's.... those ferrodos are NOT known to be low dust and low noise. they're more aggressive street/weekend warrior pads..... nutin personal but sory elhalisf but u dont know wat ur talkin about

i would also recommend the hawk+ as long as u arent doing track work, they are excellent street pads. used it in my old evo and i enjoyed it but wasnt the best (not saying they suck either) on HPDE

I use the Hawk HPS and Centric slotted and drilled rotors on all 4 corners.

Right after I installed the pads and rotors, I immediately "bedded" the brakes. The brakes are not noisy at all compared to some of my friends who did not bed their brakes properly.

obviously you did not research this very well

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=226333

thats only one quick post i found regarding the noisey hawk's. i have had experience with both, so i know.

i have never ever heard a much as a squeak from the ferodo's, even after 130 miles on a road course track in one day.

on these forums, it is the common conensus that the ferodo's do not make any noise.
