Questions about Cold Air intakes

I was considering on upgrading my intake on my stock Evo X Gsr. This will be my first mod based off of finances and time available with work. If I had more money and time I would definitely be working with the exhaust system first. My question is which type of intake performs the best, a contained box intake like a http://www.aempower.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=1394 or an open filter intake? if anyone has some product suggestions that worked for them I would appreciate that as well. Thanks! * i just realized I probably put this in the wrong forum. Sorry!

I know I can get a drop-in from HKS or Works for between $50 - $100 and see 10 - 12 HP gain. I just figure that upgrade the intake for a few extra bucks and not have to worry about touching it again. I have also read that altering the intake pipe causes to much air to pass through the MAFS and your engine runs differently. Plus, which offers the best sound with a stock mufflers / upgraded mufflers? I recall reading some posts that an air filter (whether drop in or intake) can greatly affect engine sound. So sound, HP gains, and the ability to build off it in the future is what I am looking for.

Cold Air intakes

I was in your shoes when I bought my intake. After a lot of research for my car I finally went with the Injen intake. It sounds really good with you are accelerating in the car, and defiantly looks good under the hood. I bought the powder coated back unit and it looks great. The craftsmanship is really good the best that I have seen for intakes that is. Have nothing but complements for the unit they made. If you can afford it I would recommend Injen.

My AMS short ram intake looks and works great, I definitely recommend it. I'm considering getting their cold air add-on before I get my tune either this summer or next.

AMS generally produces a very good product. But I wouldn't necessarity say they're the best.

Personally I have the Injen Intake on my Evo8 and have had little to no issues tuning with it.

I'd do some more research, but I'd go with the Injen one. They're both proven and affordable. I don't think you'll get much more out of the AMS unit over the Injen one.

You might also want to find a replacement filter for whatever intake you do end up purchasing. I know there's been some tests done using different filters and some do produce more power than others.

Good Luck

I went with ETS after looking for a while. Good price, love it so far.

Its a good product. You can't really go wrong with any of the intakes available at the moment.

$450 for just an intake, might be a little high. ETS, Buscher, or something along those lines might be a little more affordable. Plus can get another mod with the money you save. Just my 2 cents.

Keep in mind that this is a cold air intake. AMS costs more than that injen one. A short ram intake costs a lot less

No, actually it's not. It just has a heat shield and a provision for the stock duct, it still sucks air out of the engine bay. Personally, I have had really lousy luck with Injen intakes, the one on my E46 M3 made it stall when you lifted off the throttle.

This intake is way more expensive than it needs to be, but it does include the upper intercooler pipe, which is kinda nice, although doesn't make a ton of power on it's own. I went with the AEM. I like that it is enclosed like the stock box, and looks pretty stockish (no exposed filter) plus it's CARB approved, which is great here in CA. $284 shipped and I'm sure there are places that sell them cheaper.

I am still going back and forth between the sealed box AEM and the Injen. I prefer the look of the Injen but if the AEM trumps it in quality of performance then I would take it with no question. How does your car sound with the AEM? Where I live they don't have emissions testing. People were passing it with lawnmowers and it made them realized their tests were worthless.
