so...an extended warranty?

Just wondering...I'm trading in my evo 8 for a X, and I was offered a Mitsubishi extended warranty. It's supposed to be the same bumper to bumper as the normal 3 yr 36k...but it extends to 6 yr 100k. Moreover...they're telling me that it's refundable if I don't use it. They want just under $1000 for this extra warranty, and they're pushing it as a "win-win" because I either use it to fix my car, or I get the full amount back at the end of 6yrs if I don't use it.

So...what's the catch? Is it worth the money? I just signed a contract with it in, but I have 30 days to change my mind...Thanks in advance for your input!

The catch is if u do any mods they void ur warranty. So if ur planning on any mods just save the 1k and buy some mods.

lol! Really good point Monkeyfish. I should have mentioned that I don't plan on modding any time soon...but it is kind of a drag to know that I'll have to wait 6 years to really dabble with my car. It's plenty capable in stock-mode tho. My 2003 Evo was stock from the day I bought it 6 years ago (I was about ready to mod it, but decided to save a little, and just buy new)...so it won't kill me to have to wait.

Usually the extended warranties are with a 3rd party rather than Mitsubishi. You can have better luck with them getting warranty work than with Mitsubishi, if for no other reason than any certified shop can do the work, meaning less hassles about mods if you have a mechanic you use regularily.

I don't believe in extended warranties but at that price it seems like a great deal. The only downside is that it runs concurrent with the manufacturer's warranty and if you modify the car, good luck getting warranty work done. Also, they will always sell it as a "win-win" because extended warranty, parts and service are top earners for dealerships. You may even be able to negotiate the extended warranty.

I got one for a bit less than that... I bought during the period of the down turn where they couldn't sell a car to save their life let alone get someone in the show room. They gave me the employee pricing... you may want to try to ask for that

I had bought an extended warranty that covers my car and the modifcations that I put on it from the dealership...The catch is that I have to wait until the factory warranty runs out before modding....but I've already done light modifications and the dealerships I've been to have been pretty cool about it.

That's a FAR FAR FAR FAR better deal than the stupid POS gimmick warranty they sold me from my dealer. Talk about lame. Yours sounds actually better than mine.

the finance guy never offered me the 6 year 100k warranty. he did sell me the 5 year 60k extended bumper to bumper for $600.

Just keep in mind that if something happens and mitsu denies your factory warranty while within the 3/36 or 5/60 period the extended warranty will not pick it up. They will claim that theirs only picks up when the factory warranty ends.

Mine was offered by Mitsubishi but it went through a 3rd party. The contract actually seems to be more reasonable than mitsubishi. It even covers stuff I do at home such as oil changes whereas I'm sure mitsu would make it a real hassle for me if I tried to warranty the engine and did my own oil changes even though they're legally obligated to.

Also bought mine when things were going slow. They actually let me have my RA and the extended warranty at below cost cause they needed the car to meet quota.

My extended warranty gets voided if the mfr warranty is voided.

thanks for the opinions all - I really do plan on keeping my car stock for some time, so I guess I should leave the warranty in. I'll have the car paid-off in 5 years, so I can start saving for mods then! = D
