The green fluid

I got my 2010 lancer ES two weeks ago. I want to add some coolant because the reservoir is almost in the low level (when it's cold or hot). The original coolant is green, so I went to the Autoparts store (O'Reillys) to look for the same color fluid, and they said: "your car has the wrong fluid, modern vehicles don't use green coolant anymore" "take it back to the dealer to replace that coolant for the right one, other way you may damage your engine" Honestly, that's the most stupid statement I ever heard. But, since the green one is one of the the cheapest coolants, What would be the best one for this cars?

This is a good question. There's other forums on here that I found where people debate it for a couple pages. From what I've read people have used both types in their cars but everyone who says they made the switch to the orange stuff said it gunked up there coolant system pretty badly. I havent checked mine but if its got the green stuff in it already im not changing it. Certain coolants work better with certain metals. Our engines are aluminum alloy so you need to make your best judgement when choosing one.

Some choices Ive found are;
Silkolene pro-cool
Xstream G30 Antifreeze & Coolant
Otherwise when others have asked people reply with "The green or blue stuff" haha

If you really want to make sure you get the right stuff just hit up a Mitsu dealer and they will tell you exactly what you need.

Thank you Nelson for your reply. Where do you get all those brands? Since I don't want to change the current coolant, but only to add a little, Would be good idea to mix it with the yellow fluid? It is very popular, and it says "compatible with all colants, all colors." I have read the labels on the bottles of many brands, and all of them has the same this Ethylene Glycol + other same stuff.

use prestone. works great in every make and model. i used on a mazda tribute that says to only use the expensive ford junk that is no different ($30) so i said screw it. the only vehicle i know to date are gm's that use dexcool since dexcool is a very different viscosity. Me personally, i mix my own. I get the one gallon jug of prestone coolant and make 2 gallons. it's that easy. since you are in a warmer place you need only 35-40% alcohol. In colder places it can be as high as 60%

You need to be careful mixing coolants. This is what I found in another forum...

"Yes, generic stuff will do the job - however, genuine stuff generally lasts less but has been designed specifically for that particular radiator. All the rust inhibitors and things are completely neutral to the radiator, as compared to generics which could be a bit too strong for the radiator, hence supposed longer lifespan.

I would be more worried about electrochemical corrosion in the alloy block (including water pump) than your radiator.

According to Mitsu you should only use their OEM DIAQUEEN coolant but in reality I believe a decent coolant (such as Nulon) should be more than adequate if manufacturers such as Holden and Ford use and recommend it."

Mitsubishi has developed a 8 year / 150,000km (I think) blue coloured coolant that will start appearing in lots of MY11 cars. They will eventually offer this to their customers as well, as part of a complete flush of the radiator system - as this is INCOMPATIBLE with the current 2 year/45,000km green coolant.""

Prestone, the yellow one, Am I right?
You're right about GM's, I've used orange dexcool for 11 years in my camaro. Yes, it is good to buy the no water mixed coolant. Why paying extra for water.

Ive read its not good to mix coolants but I know its not easy remembering what you put in last time if you dont keep the empty jug around. If its just a little low I would add clean tap water or demineralized water.

Maybe it's good idea to buy only one Diaqueen bottle for top it offs, and when it's time to flush and refill then start using the yellow prestone. What do you think?

I just notice that you said you got your car two weeks ago. Why not call them up and ask them to top off the coolant? I'm sure they will do it for free if you got it so recently. Also, if it was full when you drove it off the lot and you say it's at low now, you might be looking at something different altogether.

FYI for other folks since I didn't know - following a sever service schedule, the first time "Change engine coolant" appears is at 60K miles.

prestone is green. in some cars it is true you have to use a special coolant, just not as many as you think. Part of it is true, part of it is ripping you off for money. But, my mitsu v6 eclipse i use prestone, the 4 cylinder eclipse uses prestone, and i know quite a few evo owners using it. The alochol/water mixture makes it corrosive, not enough alcohol usually. that's why i buy the full gallon, take an empty prestone container pour half in there and fill both with water. done.

I would say with many mechanics too. I have deal with all of them.
