Intermittent squeal from brakes when turning
I'd appreciate some in identifying and resolving an intermittent squeal on my Evo VI.
The symptoms.
While returning from a swift (but not anywhere near balistic) run this earlier this week, where I had driven for just over half a mile at 20 - 30 mph to let the brakes cool, I started turning into my drive and heard a noticable high pitched squeal from what I presume was the front brakes. I then straighted up and the squeel all but stopped (I could only hear it if I lowered the window), but, as soon as I applied any lock, left or right, the squeal got louder again.
Interestingly, there was no squeal when the discs and pads were cold or when they were hot - only when cooling down after getting hot.
I would appreciate views on whether my my initial thoughts are likely to be anywhere near the mark, or if I'm actually barking up the wrong tree altogether. Here goes:
I presume that as the squeal appears to increase when lock is applied, then this could be caused by the movement of the caliper (and brake pads) relative to the disc. Presumably this could be a result of:
1. A worn hub with play in the bearing (how can I check for this, and how much play is / would be too much ?)
2. A loose caliper. (I will check this out, but are there any other tell tale signs, that I should look out for ?)
3. A warped disc/s. I don't think this is the problem, as the discs are new(ish) 400 miles, 2 piece, 6 groove and had < 1.7 thou runout when fitted (well within the acceptable tolerance, I was told by Xtreme (formally Ralliart)). Also there is no noticable tremor or vibration through the steering wheel when braking, when the discs are hot or cold.
4. ??
The real cause and the solution.
Ideas, comments and help on what else to check for, and what I need to do to determine what is causing this squeal would be much appreciated.
