SST not for big modding
SST not for big modding
I have a new MR with a tune and I love it but it just seems like its not the way to go for big hp. I cant see people having such a love affair with this tranny to just kiss the warranty good bye. Once you go big mods(cams, turbo) it seems like now you are on your own. The proposed new clutch will be 1200.00 plus another 1200.00 to install. Now you are hoping this mod will be your savior as you go over 400whp. This tranny is so complicated its a matter of time till the tranny needs work.
Now what. Who repairs them? I dont know of anyone yet, Cha ching $8,000 for a new one. by this time you will be fed up with the SST but you have to fix it or the car will be a flower pot on the side of the house. So unless you have deep repair pockets this isnt the car to mod. This is the reason all the shops are modding the gsr's. Its good to see shops stepping up to make parts but they will be sold in low quantities with huge markups to pay for the R&D costs. I dont plan on having this car when the warranty is up, I do plan on romping on it with no worries.

Why so negative? But the bigger question is, why did you buy the MR if your so worried about modding it. Sounds like you should have bought the GSR. Eventually the market for upgraded clutch packs will catch up, it just takes time. As with SSP, their ground breaking ideas and craftsmanship for the SST upgrade will set the bar for the industry to follow.
And its not just cams and an upgraded turbo is when your on your own. The way Mitsubishi treats their warranty, once you install an aftermarket intake, your pretty much on your own.

Yeah but an intake can be switched back in a hour, if you roll to the dealer with easy bolt on parts still on the car you would be a dumm ****. I'm not negative I have and love my MR I'm at 300 to the wheels, but it will never be the car to mod to crazy. Find me one MR that is burning up the track competitively in the US, all the shops know its to weak and complicated to bother with. Let me reiterate I love mine, but it is what it is.
strocse, you are desperately close to trolling with some of your comments. I took my stock MR to Harris Hill Road in San Marcos, TX, this past Friday for a DE event. My too weak and complicated car was hanging just fine with the competition.
Following that we spent Saturday burning through the twisties in the Hill Country where a certain GSR driver was making a lot of noise about how he was spending all his time shifting, while i was spending all my time enjoying the drive.
Big modding? Who the hell knows what the future will bring for this transmission. Certainly SSP's upgraded clutch packs will help some realize their high HP dreams. I, for one, am here to tell you this car is pretty dang good the way they delivered it from the factory (not saying it is perfect). If you wanted a 500 whp drag beast (then go get yourself a GN), then you should have done more research before you bought. If you want a car that is a fantastic DD and can hang with serious competition, then the MR certainly fits the bill.

And that was stock! A tune with no other mods will get you a smoother power band (at least 40 extra WHP and most likely more) and real gains up top that is missing now.
