Manual mode - WOT shifting?

Maybe this is a silly question, but I'm curious how other people drive their SST when manually shifting it. Do you let off the throttle when you upshift, or do you just stay on it?

I have stayed on it a few times at WOT, and I noticed the engine can overrun a bit, just like any manual car would while WOT shifting, but it occurred to me that maybe that's not a good thing for the clutch packs?

You're meant to be able to maintain WOT through the upshifts.

Go and drop in on the evoxforums discussions on SST development, SST logging and tuning, etc.

http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61388

http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59775

There are some guys active in those threads who are (a) pro tuners, and (b) pushing the SST envelope with their personal vehicles. While there are some equivalent threads here on EvoM, the discussions on EvoX have a bit more meat on their bones (right now, anyway).

Why manual shift? Put the transmission in your desired mode and let it do it's job...the guys who programmed it are smarter than us

Until it starts bouncing the rev limiter because it cant shift itself at WOT...

The people who programmed it are probably smarter than us, yes.

But then you have the committee of marketing managers, sales-support consultants, warranty-return analysts and newly graduated accountants who undoubtedly produced 2500 pages of contradictory spec docs to give to the programmers...

And that's just Getrag/Ford. Then they handed it all over to the committees...

Rich

PS. This is all just guesswork. But think Dilbert and you probably won't be far wrong.

PPS. It's possible the people who programmed in lived in Elbonia, and coded for 6 cents a day.

It just wasn't programed for so much hp. At near stock s-sport auto mode is amazing. 400 whp you need some expert sst tuning. Once they hack the tcu things will get very interesting.

For Road Racing I've only tried auto-shift mode once and hated it, I much preffer to know exactly what RPM and gear I'm in at any one time. It's not always about having the most revs and horsepower to get around a road course the quickest since sometimes upsetting the car with a shift you weren't expecting can literally send you off the track... and we know that means a very BAD lap time.

Around town I let it take over but find it hovers around 2000 rpm in normal and excessively shifts to reach 6th gear even at low speeds. In sport mode it tends to hover around 4000 rpm too often and with an exahust that about doubles in noise from 3000 to 4500 I find that annoying too. Supersport, well, it puts extra stress on the engine that doesn't need to be done by reving the snot out of the engine.

So for around town I almost always drive in sport mode and hover my rpm's between 3000 and 3500. It would be nice if we could adjust the target thresholds for the RPM's. At the track I'm in super sport manually shifting wherever the car needs to be, I always have my hands on the steering wheel and can concentrate on car balance and other important things to keeping the car predictable and smooth.

I put it in manual mode when I'm anticipating the need to pass someone on the freeway. Drop to 3rd or 4th, and it usually involves at least one upshift. Thing is, without a clutch pedal under my left foot I never really know when the clutch is fully engaged. I'm wondering if it's slipping the clutch hard on say a 3rd to 4th shift at WOT, because the revs seem to just stay up there.

Driving the SST from a mental perspective takes some getting used to. I'm used to knowing when the clutch is engaged, slipping, etc. With the SST, I'm trying to listen for it but like I said the revs stay so high it almost sounds like it must be slipping the clutch, but without any way to tell I just don't know.

I know on the Blitz Touch BRAIN it shows me around 8050 to 8080 peak rpms, but when I let the car shift itself it usually peaks at 7500. I've got the GSC S2's so I'm not worried about the peak RPMs, just as a reference point to figure out what the trans is doing.

I agree with you. I find myself driving with the radio off alot so I can hear/feel what the car is doing better. Especially when I'm in the mood for spirited driving. I'm having my SST tables tuned soon hoping it will add a little grab to the gear changes.

it wasn't too long after i got my car that i decided that s-sport manual was the only mode that seems to keep me happy. I can shift at what ever rpm i want. while in city driving i'll keep it as close to 2500-3000rpm and when i'm merging i'll floor it and shift at about 6000. WOT shifts seem to be smooth with no hanging revs like sometimes in auto mode. Ps i also find that trying normal manual or sport manual that the clutches do slip wayy too much for my liking. i'll only drive in normal or sport if i plan on driving easy.
