Gear slip from 3-5 , Code P1833...

This is about my friend 2008 X .

We (me & Friends ) drive every weekend very aggressive for about 2 Hours
i country roads .

Every trip, my friend Gear slips from 3 to 5 gear with gear service notice
on the display screen .

After search i have the diagnostic : The Code is , P1833 .
And in the manual its say :

P1833 :Shift fork position sensor 4 system ( out-put range out)

Thats why the gear slip from 3-5 gear ....

By the way , i don't know if its important , but my friend ( owner of this car) told me that this slip problem happened every time he turn the car right !?!?

Now , we located in israel , and the dealearship answer like i expected is :
Replace the gearbox .....

Frankly i dont blame the israeli mitsubishi dealership , since there only sold 5 EVO X
in our holy land , and they dont know much about this car !

Now , when he turn off the car & start again , the problem disappear , but come again
after 20 minutes

the car ID & modification is :

2008 X
Full one local Exhaust hand made ( down& test pipe & cat back) form A to Z
And tuned by local tuner with Ecuteck .

This is the only improvement for this car .
by the way , 6.5 L diaqueen + original filter replaced 2 month ago .

what is seems to be the problem to your opinion ?

can anyone help me / Have experience with this problem ?

Amir

The magnets inside the transmission get big ***** of iron filings on them causing them to grow. When you get this type of code intermittently, it is likely that the magnets need to have the filings cleaned off them. When the magnets get to much metal on them, they effectively grow, causing the sensors to see incorrect positions. Fortunately you can get to all of the magnets with the TCU removed and the transmission in the car, since they are inside the transmissions. It is not likely that your TCU is faulty, though it is possible, it is unlikely.

A microfiber cloth seems to do a good job of collecting up the filings from the magnets.

I would follow the advice above, but another thing we have also noticed is the magnets on the fork could be damaged.

Do you hear a grinding sound when the car is started or when cold? If so, the 2nd gear synchro is likely grinding on start-up due to clutch issues and this will damage the 2/4 fork magnets.

When you have the valve-body off to clean the magnets, take a very close look at them to be sure they are still mounted solid and straight on the forks. If one of them feels loose, then that's most likely the issue.

Good luck!

Jack
