Getting started in Karting; anyone Kart?

Does anyone Kart on the forums?

I sold my Evolution, and although I'm broke now, perhaps in the future I would be interested in getting involved in Karting. How did you get started? What are the costs? Is it more dangerous than it looks?

Thanks,
JD

Both my wife and I run 125cc Rotax. Its a lot of fun. Figure $5500 new or $4500 for a nice used kart. Tires are $175 and will last 2-3 events if you don't need the last .5 secs. I've run 5-6 practice events, but then your off the pace by as much as 2 seconds.

Gas is basically free as they take almost none. Motors are $300 for the top end every 25 hours and $600 for the entire motor every 50 hours. If you can run 2 hours in a day your either 17 or in really good shape.

Anyone can get started. Talk to the guys at the local tracks, and they will help you out. I've alwasy found it to be a fun community.

I started in go-karts, when I was very young. Great way to get the feel for performance driving, without the severe cost. However, the last years I raced, I was spending about 25G a year, racing on 6 different circuits here and in Europe. So, you can spend the money if you try, luckily, I had sponsors, and LOTS of them. But, it was a great way to get my name into the sport of racing, so I could quit and go to college.

Like StopandTurnFreak I started racing karts at 8 yrs old and raced for about 5 years. I was winning track championships left and right and decided to quit for something more challenging. Boy was that a mistake. I could be in an F1 seat right now. Instead I am in an NHRA/IHRA seat.

who makes more money? F1 driver or NHRA driver? hahahahaha... now your reduced to skipping out on track days for 25 seconds of racing over an entire weekend. and when you actually have time to play with us NTEC guys it is on the slick track at speed zone

Haha very funny. I make millions at Nissan so I'm not worried.

Rotax is the way to go. Spec classes and Sealed motors keep the costs down. Stay away from Shifters. Their days and done. I raced Rotax for a few years until my local track closed. By far the best bang for the buck. It will teach you driving skills better then anything else.
