tire pressure for road course

Hey guys,

I'm going to a track event this weekend and wanted to know what kind of tire pressure you guys have been running on stock advans

I have been told 40psi (hot) upfront and 35psi in the rear

I will be checking pressure before and after each session but I would like to know what pressure you guys have been haveing good luck with.

Thanks

Chris

Do you have a pyrometer to take tire temp readings? This will help you find the best pressure setup. Also, a proper alignment will also help your handling tremendously. What are your alignment specs?

I ran about 43psi in the front and rear for auto-x, but the corners are sharper and we have more trouble with the sidewalls rolling over. Also, I run about -2.5 camber in the front and -1.5 in the rear, with zero toe. Mind you this is with a custom coilover setup and a stiffer rear bar, but that setting should work well with the stock suspension also. Good luck and have fun on your track day.

Good setup u should try -1 on your rear toe and see how that works for exiting corners.

I just ran at Pocono 2 weeks ago and played with the tire pressure on the stock Advans. 40front and 38 rear worked good for me.

just a quick question,
has anyone tried tire pressure down low enough to rub the tires at the wear marker?
Last spring I never got the pressure low enough to rub the tires at the markers, maybe in the heat it will be different?

That will work if you want the car to understeer. Many people are more comfortable with understeer, so they drop their rear pressures dramatically. I've been driving RWD BMW's for the last 15 years and I prefer a neutral car that maybe tend towards mild oversteer.

I have an '03 Evo with stock suspension...so my settings may not translate 100% to the MR. With stock Yokos, I find that 40 psi (hot) in the front and 41.5 psi (hot) in the rear gives the car a VERY nice and neutral balance. You get a bit of understeer but it's very easy to transition into mild oversteer. It makes the car MUCH more throttle adjustible.

I ran 40-41f / 39r hot at the last two thunderhill events. 05 MR

Stock suspension with upgrade rear sway + stock tires. -2 front camber

Car felt great, easy throttle steering, etc. Little bit of push if you went into a corner too hot but that's normal with stock suspension.

I run 35 psi all around. Keep that as the baseline and then either inflate or deflate accordingly. But maybe lower the front so the rear wants to come around to help it turn?

i felt like 38-39 front (cold) and 42-45 rear (also cold) felt great with the stock advans.

I ususally run 2 psi more in the rear.. but it really just depends on the track and conditions.

Jon, 45 cold in the rear? wow.... that is alot! how much is the psi at the end of a session?

I'm also amazed by this! I can understand in auto-x setting, but I can't imagine how that would work on the track.

Running 40psi HOT front and rear with stock suspension. Maxed front camber and -1.5 camber in the rear. Tire temps were within one degree F from inside to outside. Pretty much what I would call perfect for the stock Advans and the track.

At 40psi the Advans wanted to stay more consistent then my previous 38psi HOT temps. I found more initial grip with 38psi, but the outside edge always overheated and the tire lost grip very quickly.

Kaylaap,
Sounds like you like the oversteer tendency, but oversteer in the Evo scares me. It seems to happen unpredictably and when it does it happens fast. I've drove a 95 M3 and had oversteer, but I planned on the oversteer and usually created it myself. The oversteer problem in the Evo could very well be driving related. Right now I'm thinking it's because I need more throttle because it usually happens pre-mid-corner right before I would get back on the gas. But man when it happens it does so without warning and fast. It's like all of a sudden my rear tires are made of glass. Luckily it just takes a quick flick of steering correction to fix.

51/51 hot usually.

I also dont always run that high in the back, at roebling its 42, i dont need so much rotation, CMP, the short corners I run the backs up that high.
