Stock Wing

Has anyone run an track events with the Stock Wing vs. without the Stock Wing or Wingless. I was wondering is it made any difference at all. I have two track days this weekend and I have been running the car without a wing on the street. I was curious to see if it made a difference on the track? Any Help? Sorry if this is any sort of repost.

I haven't but Motortrend have an article about the RS vs the regular EVOs (with wing), they said the RS had a tendency to oversteer through the slalom because of the lack of a stock wing ... hope that helps ...

I put it back on for the event, I had forgotten about the motor trend write up. I may do a session with and a session without to see if there is any diffrence.

I took mine off and could tell a difference just driving on the street, so I'm sure it makes a difference on the track.

My guess is that it does make a fair bit of difference. I run a low wing at the track and want to get a big wing etc for those high speed turns... rear end gets more nervous than I'd like.

Talk to Robi (robispec) about the difference his big APR wing makes over the stock evo wing. He's a believer in big wings!

I ran my RS for maybe 10 track days before adding a stock wing. On fast tracks like Big Willow and Calif. Speedway ROVAL, I definitely think it makes a difference.

Here is the way I look at it..

Mitsubishi WRC car runs the stock wing. (Other than the weird mid trunk thing they had)

Subaru STi uses a different wing than theirs stock, with all kinds of goodies on it.

If the Evo wing were not functional, I am betting it wouldn't be there on the WRC car. (I would like to try that strange mid trunk mounted one though)

Also.. Turn 8/9 at Roebling Road is a long 100-108mph sweeper, and I run the stock evo through there on OEM Advans flat, the back end does tend to move around a bit, I am thinking that if the wing were not there, It would be harder to run flat.

Grey, if you really care about times (which you shouldn;t yet) then I would run the wing at Roebling where there are three 100mph + corners, and take it off for CMP, where there is only one. (and its just a kink)

On another note.. It looks like I will get to try the APR wing, and I hope it works, if not that I would think about a wing from Crawford Composites in NC.

The two aftermarket wings I have driven with on Evos were junk, with as much as 4 inches of oscilation at 130mph.

Speeds are about 130 mph at the end of the front straight at Willow Springs Int'l Raceway (big track), and about 140 mph on the Cal. Speedway ROVAL. The wing makes me more comfortable at those speeds.

There is still a great deal of conjecture, by engineers even, concerning the efficiency of the stock Evo wing. Remember, the WRC wing IS adjustable, and ours is not, and is set for a minimal amount of downforce. I think it says something that the RS comes Sans wing, Mits knowing that many hardcore racers were going to put on a GT wing that is fully adjustable. I just sold mine, and will be replacing it with a fully adjustable wing (APR) this winter, when I upgrade to 255 tires and add the front spoiler and canards as well. I do not believe that the wing makes that much functional difference as it stands.

Sorry if this is kind-of a noob and off topic question, but when/how do you guys get to race on these tracks such as willow spirings? Are there certian track days you can go out and pay for a day of racing if you have the proper gear or do you need to join NASA or what? Thanks

There are internet car clubs that rent out the tracks, and then sell space to individual drivers. If you are a newbie, they have a class you take first thing in the morning, and then you go out on track with an instructor.

SpeedVentures has Willow Springs Big Track on Aug. 13 & 14 -- go to www.speedventures.net to sign up

Also check out the schedules of:

Personally, I don't like NASA for HPDE, because you get very little track time. They have way to many cars, and they have 4 HPDE groups and 2 race groups, etc. and its a real circus.
