First DE: Done

I just got done doing my first DE at Summit Point and I had a great time! Everyone needs to do these!

The temp was in the mid-80's this weekend with moderate humidity. I was running 19lbs. on Saturday but cranked it back to 16/17lbs. today. Now, on to the questions.

1. My oil temp gauge goes to 250F andit was pretty much pegged there through my entire run. I was a little surprised since the car has an oil cooler, I assumed that temps would stay a little lower. My probe is tapped in next to the filter and it usually runs around ~190 at normal cruising.

2. My EGT gauge goes to 1600F and it was a bit past the end of the gauge on the front straight. I was WOT in 4th and hit ~110-120 before backing off (~7k RPM) for the rest of the straight. As soon as I let off it started to come down but I was getting a bit worried. I eventually filled the tank 3/4 of the way with 100 octane (@ 5.75/gallon ) and it semed to help a tiny bit, maybe a hundred degrees cooler. The probe is tapped into the collector (I think that's what it's called, after the runners) and reads about 1200-1400 in normal cruising.

Mainly, I would like to know if these numbers are still safe. Would adding a fuel pump to richen things up help lower my EGT's? Does anyone make an upgraded oil cooler and where can I get it? I did a quick search but didnt come up with anything.

Anyway, I had a ridiculously good time today and cant wait for my next one in September!

Sorry, cant answer your questions, but would like to ask you some-what group did you run with-was it a club or Friday At The Track? I'm looking to go to Summit before the weather changes. Did you run stock tires and brake pads?
Thanks!

I ran with the local Mercedes club, http://www.gws-mbca.org/ The only modifications to the car are in my sig, all suspension and brake components are stock. I was on the stock (as in, from the factory) brake fluid since my car only has 4000 miles on it. Before the next one Im going to put ATE fluid in it just to be safe.

The next event Im doing is the NASA event at Summit Main on September 24/25.

Also, I was running Mobil1 15W-50 if that makes a difference in how hot I can get before becoming unsafe.

EGT is exhaust temperature, right?

How much past 1600 degrees Farenheit did your Exhaust temperature go? I understand that it should never go higher than 900 degress Celsius, which is 1652 degrees Farenheit. The highest mine has ever gone is about 875 deg. C, or 1607 deg. F.

It sounds like you are still in the saftey zone, but just barely. You need to watch this.

So did you get the HPDE bug? Are you going to spend every spare penny on entry fees, fuel, tires and mods? It's addicting, IMHO.

That photo of you in the first post... Is that you entering Turn 6 (the Carousel) on the main course at Summit? If so, that silver car in the background is WAY off line.

Get a suspension on that car and tame that body roll.

Great, good to hear someone else having a good time with their Evo.

Your numbers ound safe, but just barely. I try to keep my temps down to 220 on oil, and 1500 EGT.

Also, if you are trimming boost, then I would HIGHLY recommend you get an Wideband 02 for your car. It is a great way to keep tabs on what your car is doing.

Yes, exhaust gas temp. It looked like it was barely past 1600 because it would come back down fairly quickly when I let off the throttle. I definitely got the bug. I will be autocrossing less and doing more track days from now on!

Yes it is and yes he is. I saw some very 'interesting' lines being taken in my run group. Even as a total novice it was obvious to me that they were waaayy off line.

Prior to this weekend I was going to do cams as my next mod...now Im thinking coilovers. Nothing before my next event in September though, I need to learn the car as it sits now.

So, do you guys think adding a fuel pump would help cool down my temps? If Im not mistaken, running richer will cool down the exhaust a bit. Perhaps a wideband and S-AFC might help me keep things safe out there as well.

I was at SP 2 weeks before with NASA ( Hyperfest event), that day was much hotter than this past weekend, the temp is about 90f outside. I remember my oil temp went as high as 260F. I ran 19.5 psi on boost. On cool down lap, it drop back to 210f. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to lower the oil temp except shifting at a lower rpm (like 6k instead of 7k). I know I will and may have to slow down once it reach a higher temp.

Not sure about egt as i don't have that. on the other side, my water temp was pretty stable.....never go above 220f.

How did your brake pads and tires hold up? Any brake fade or significant tire wear?

They held up real well, my tires dont even show that much wear. I dont think I felt the brakes fade once, either.

Either that or someone is coming in on a very aggresive pass - you know how those DE's are

By the way - I will be there on the 19th. Will you be doing that date?

My next event is the NASA event on September 24-25. I will probably do the Ferrari of Washington event in Oct./Nov. as well.

Awesome Mike...

I'll be at the NASA event.

I'm bringing a couple of co-workers:

s2000
G35 6MT

Where do you have your EGT probe located?

The probe is in the collector, after the runners. Definitely find me at the event, I think MACH V has its own section so I should be there.
