'safety zone' settings

Lets discuss safety zones on what our gauges tell us. Specifically for hot lapping during HPDE's.

ie: I am marking my guages with yellow tape so I can see if the needle is moving towards danger zones. Hopefully that will allow me time to cool things down before it would get critical.

specifically afr, egt, water temp, oil temp & oil pressure.. hell, even boost (considering different fuels in mind).

what are your guys thoughts on this?

tia,

Exhaust temp should never go over 900 degrees Celsius.

Good question! I've been wondering what you guys are getting for oil temps. Mine seems to hover around the 200 degree mark...which seems quite low to me. What's the normal range (street vs. track)? anyone know?

Oil Temp went up to 120C and stayed there for the entire track session. don't know if it's good or bad but nothing happened.

Cant' remember the EGT readings but i'm sure they did not go past 900C. I have the warning set at 900C and that never went off

btw - i have the Defi BF gauges

70-80C (158F-176F) is normal street operating temp.

I have seen my oil temps go as high as 135C (275F) on track at thunderhill but that was a 108F temp day! The last event it was approx 80F out, and my oil temps maxed about 120C (248F)

Over 900C EGT is bad. It really depends on where you have the probe mounted as well. I have mine in the beginning of exhuast runner #2 and 870-880 is pretty hot for that location (I get alot of knock around there on 91octane)

With my tune, and 100octane, 1.6bar boost, last event I would hit around 880C max. Which is comfortable to me with 100 octane and flogging the car 200 miles on the track in a day.

My water temp never goes over 100C, I think the max it has been is around 95C. Probe in upper radiator hose. 75% distilled water, 1.5 bottles waterwetter, rest is coolant.

On hot summer days at the track, which we have boku in SoCal at Willow Springs and Buttonwillow (as well as at Thunderhill in Norcal), the only way to keep water temp down and avoid overheating is to get a racing radiator. I have the PWR radiator from Australia, which is twice the size of the stock radiator. Installing it requires some fabrication to keep your air conditioner, such as putting the fan on the rear instead of the front. Road Race Chassis installed mine. It's easier if you are willing to give up your A/C, which also saves weight, but I wanted to keep my A/C for those hot drives back and forth to the track in summer.

I haven't had a water temp problem with my EVO at hot track days this summer. (see above) Although the water has been heating up my oil a bit. So I will probably end up getting a racing radiator at some point.

Water pegged at 90c? What gauge do you have. That's a useless gauge if it only goes to 90c.

Your oil is toasty!

Rather than tape, I turn all my gauges so that the peak is at the 12 o'clock position. It makes them very easy to read at a glance, but it looks half retarded.

yea, thats a good idea... I dont even use tape anymore... just set the warning on the guages a lil bit before I actually want them to go off.. as a security blanket.
