This is a reminder that what we are doing is dangerous. A driver and passenger in a $440,000 Porsche Carrera GT were killed at an HPDE event at California Speedway earlier this year, whent there was a mix-up at the start-finish line, and a Ferrari went out on track just as the Porsche was flying down the front straight at 160 mph. Be careful out there.

I remember that. I had exchanged posts with the Carrera GT driver (a nice guy by the name of Ben) on a Porsche club/forum we were both affiliated with. Very sad that he died along with the passenger. Such a foul situation, the F-car had no business getting waved onto the track at that place.

Very sad about the Lime Rock driver as well. In a Radical, too...

Definitely be safe out there!

A few years ago I was doing a HPDE event at Summit Point. I met a guy in the paddock and was talking to him for about 10 minutes about his car -- a supercharged Mustang Cobra. He was telling me how his usual track car -- a highly modified and caged 911 was in the shop -- when he said he had to go for his session. Less than 20 minutes later the track was black flagged and I heard about a major crash. I watched the cars come around looking for that Mustang and it wasn't in the line of cars. Turns out he went off at the end of the straight at very high speed and did multiple rolls through the gravel trap and over the tire wall before coming to rest in an area beyond the usual runoff area. He was airlifted out and died shortly thereafter. Big power and no cage or harnesses = bad track combo.

It was some of the last laps of the day (a little fatigue??) and he was just signed off - I believe it was a Boxster-S.

Sorry to hear this!
Wondered if he would have survived with a Hans device.

I wonder if it would do any good if some sort of hans device for track were attached through the seat belt runners on the stock evo seats. Sorry for the family.

It is always a bit rough to hear about this stuff. We go to these events to events to be with friends and share some fun on the track. There is risk, but we always hope the people around us have "be safe" somewhere in the back of their minds. One thing I keep reminding myself of when I'm out there is that I don't need to get that extra second out of every lap - I'm just here to have fun.

My condolences to the doctor's friends and family.
