Used race tire sources
hi.
i run my #11 PS-1 Ford Probe GT on used "take off" R comps. this is what you do:
1. go to all the NASA and SCCA road race weekends that you can.
2. hang out at the Tire Services truck/trailer. be helpful and friendly. every time someone comes in to have stickers mounted, ask them if you can take the seconds home with you.....
3. i generally leave with anywhere from 4 to 16 tires.....
the probe runs 16" wheels, so i am always looking for 245-45-16s or 225-50-16s. these are fairly uncommon tires; but lots of 944s run them, plus the occasional 2000-2001 S2000. you, i presume, are looking for 17s, which are quite common. at the NASA races, most of the AI and AI-X cars run 17s (lots of Toyos).
pros of this method: lots of free or almost free tires.
cons: they are being taken off for a reason. check them carefully for damage/cords/flatspots. the ones you are looking for are generally from well financed teams that change tires often when they start to "fall off", not due to cords/damage, etc.
one has to realize that the take-offs are usually 1 or more seconds slower than a fresh sticker tire. i just plan on making up the difference with some spectacular driving out on the track!!!
good luck with your hunting!

Todd,
Do you have an EVO as well as the PGT?

Also any sources of used 255/40/17s would be great info to have!

yup; my everyday driver is a 2003 EVO (i have put 35k miles on her; a really nice car to swallow miles in!).
i also have:
- 1995 Honda H1 Civic DX with K20A power. this is my "primary" racecar
- 1993 Ford Probe GT PS-1. this is my "backup" or "secondary" racecar
- Lotus Super Seven. this is my "typically broken down" or "historic racecar". currently, its got no engine in it!
as for the used R comps; come to any of the NASA races; that is a popular tire size for most of the AI/AI-X racers to run (American Iron). the "big boys" in that group will often pull off the tires before they are "done in" and put on fresh stickers to gain that extra 1/2 sec.....
