EVOlutionary's Autocross Video Thread
Hi All,
Through this thread I'm going to share some videos of my autocross expoits throughout the year. It will contain everything from small regional autocrosses - all the way up to Nationals in September. There will probably be a few other treats thrown in too (Winged Warrior footage, DSM/EVO shootout, etc.) Enjoy!
I will update this throughout the summer as I attend more events.
I will start it off with this short vid - a SVR region autocross at Barstow Airport in Midland, MI. This is my fastest run of the day:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...69474597494028
After the regular event we had an "Index Challenge" where we took the top cars from each class and lined them up in a 32-car bracket (like NCAA playoffs) based on index times. We then did a single elimination "tournament". I made it through each round, and eventually ran my best time of the day in the finals against a F125 cart. I ran a 39.x and I think he ran a 37.x, but based on index I was the victor!

Here is a video from the CenDiv #4 Solo event this past weekend at Wurtsmith AFB in lovely Oscoda, MI. This is an awesome site - great grippy concrete and a nice small town/resort feel to the weekend. Friday we had a Solo Trials, kind of a cross between a time trial and a solo 2. Average speeds were around 60MPH with peaks up in the 80's for an average BSP, ESP, or SM car.
Saturday we had a test and tune - work 1 hour and get to run the rest of the day to test and perfect (yeah, right) your setup.
Sunday was the 4th event of the CenDiv Solo 2 Championship Series. I ran Street Mod class on my Advan Neova street tires. This class seems to be pretty soft around this area so far. I won by 2.5 seconds over the next fastest car in SM (Civic on race tires). There was another EVO in a different class (STU) who ran faster than me. The owner (Silencer on these forums) was a little faster than me, and the co-driver (the well-dressed John Tak) killed me by over a second. Silencer - you have a nice car!! Love the shocks! And John, superb driving as ususal!
Here is my vid - tried something a little different with the music this time:

Cool videos, just a little feedback on the incar from the cendiv thing on 7/9/06. It looked like you were over driving it a lot in areas, braking a bit too late and inducing some understeer like that. It seemed like you should try to look ahead more. And your steering inputs looked like they needed to be smoothed out a lot - too much sawing. Finally I thought it seemed like your slalom work was a bit late - try to slow down some and stay tight and smooth in a slalom and really try to accelerate out and though it.
I hope some of that helps, I love it when I get a bit of feed back on my incar - I am far from a perfect autoxer but those are just some observations I got. Hope some of it helps!

Andrew,
Thank you for your input. This weekend I did another race and shot some more video focused directly on the steering wheel and shift knob. I used to drive with one hand and rest my right hand on the shifter for 1/2 the course. Got that fixed, but I did notice the sawing of the wheel through sweepers. I didn't even realize I was doing it as much as the video showed. I just can't pick the right line and hold it - I have to correct, uncorrect, overcorrect, etc. I know I need to work on that.
As for the overdriving, that has been a problem I have battled since day 1. It is so hard to make my mind realize that usually slower and smoother is faster. When I am not paying attention to times or trying to beat someone else I usually surprise myself and get decent times. But when I think "I have to really nail this one to beat XX.XXX time - I end up pushing too hard, brake late into corners, push out wide, come too hot into slaloms and get behind and have to slow way down, etc.
I'm going to work on it, but it's gonna take a while. Right now the car is so fast I'm having trouble looking ahead far enough. I'm focussing too much on what's happening right in front of me. It will come with practice and time, hopefully!!
I'll have another video up soon from this weekends CenDiv at Oscoda, MI (2nd weekend in a row at that site). I tried a couple new angles again - we'll see how they turn out.

^ No problem.
I suffer from a lot of those problems - I saw at the wheel and in general have had a tendency to over drive. But this season I have really worked on it. I think overall me learning to look ahead and scan the course will help me smooth out and whatnot, but its much easier said than done. Luckily the Evo school helped and just seat time is helping.
Anyway, check this out - I love these tips, maybe run over em - they are good principles.

Oh and here is a incar video from me and a really good driver that also has a STi and is in STU with me (OVR region). Note he (mike smith) is smoother than me and uses the course better overall. I love learning from video and whatnot, anyway take a look if ya want.
