As an alternative to guessing, you can fit yourself with a cheaper-brand helmet (HJC has pretty universal sizing) at your local cycle shop, and go to a inexpensive online vendor for savings. I went to a local dealer to be fitted, then went online to buy the higher end name brand helmet in my apropriate size...Safety gear should not be an area where you scrimp out or cut corners...Some events require close-face (or so I have been told), so you may want to look into that, because it is much better than having to buy two helmets, and it is certainly better than having to use the loaner (eww!!)...I found the helmet I was looking for at about 50% off of retail pricing (per the manufacturor website)...I researched for a short while to find a good deal, and wound up purchasing a Shoei helmet from this website http://www.saferacer.com/ ... They carry all of the higher-end names (Simpson, Arai, Shoei, etc) and fit my budget with free shipping, I would highly highly reccomend this website...Also, you might want to research what features you want in a helmet...For me, a removable liner and a removable windscreen were a must-have...Others may want to look into something such as breath guards or air tunnels, for example...The best way to find out what you need is to ask what the requirements are at the local raceway...I think honestly a peice of junk bicycle helmet would suffice at the auto-x events, considering the ultra colorful, cracked-shell, broken chin strap loaner I was issued at my first event...Road racing is a different ballpark, and drag racing can be pretty strict depending on your level of power...I would reccomend a close-faced helmet in order to avoid hassle, but I would also reccomend a brand name that counts for something...Not trying to flame the guys who ride bikes and wear the inexpensive brands, like HJC, I'm just saying, I want something that is tested more than just meeting requirements, even in a road-car...

I've always had good luck with http://www.apexperformance.net/ . Their helmets come with a helmet bag and free shipping, plus their prices are very good.
