If you don't need a HANS by name, then you might want to check out the Isaac. You can get them for around $700. I was impressed by the design. Also, you can rent one for the weekend for like 60 bucks. Try it out (but you have to drill your helmet...so I don't know how practical that is).

The fact that they're specifically disallowed in road racing and rally use by the FIA and SFI is a pretty good sign

So the anti-submarining mechanism on the Schroth harnesses don't do the same thing? Having one shoulder strap elongate at a different rate would generate a similar "pulley" effect to prevent the body from sliding under the lap belt no?

I'm not trying to argue here. I know the safest way to go is have a full cage, fixed-back seat, 5-pt harness w/ a HANS device. But unfortunately, we all live in a world of compromises. Most of us drive our street cars on track. We have to choose whether we want to sacrifice street safety for track safety. Most of us compromise by picking a middle ground.

Stock seat belts are also disallowed in road racing as well, but people still use them on track. Although not good enough for road racing, I chose the Schroth 4-pt harness because I feel it is safer than the stock seat belt on-track. Schroth's website shows videos of crash testing they've done w/ the belts. I wouldn't have run any other 4-pt harness.

Off of schroth's website. (talking about the hans)

"The device can be used with most FIA approved 5- or 6- point racing harnesses or with any of the specifically designed HANS specific SCHROTH harnesses.

When you go to the Profi III-FE asm this is what you get..

"4-Point Professional Restraint; approx. 1.76 kg (3.88 lbs); 3“ Lap belts; RFR™ Push Button Buckle fixed to the inboard lap belt; asm® system, FIA (motor sports) and ECE-R 16.04 (street legal) approved; meets the applicable provisions of FMVSS 209 (US street legal); allows for upgrade to 5- or 6-point competition restraint; NOT HANS® compatible!"

So to counter, this unit, when the 5th or 6th point is added, the harness is FIA APPROVED. However, the ASM is not HANs compatible.
