This weekend is the Carolina Motorsports Park SCCA National Event in Kershaw, SC. Today was the test day, and CJ and Marty are running their cars in T2.
Today went well for both, they finished wearing out old tires and brakes while reaquainting themselves with the track they made the trip to last summer for the EvolutionM.net Evo Tuner Shootout.
Both Marty and CJ ran sub-1:50s and one of them might have even run faster than the track record of 1:48.8 set by an STI this weekend a year ago. (and since it isn't official or anything unless it's in a race, then why go bragging right?)
Anyway, picture time.

So I forgot to adjust the white ballance, and you guys get an artsy black and white view of the cars in the paddock.

New jail cells for terrorists or what happens when you mess up while working as crew for Marty? You decide. (Or it could be some of the clowning that takes place when a test day is actually going smooth.)

CJ on track.

Marty on track.

The pair driving between turns one and two at CMP.

Marty heads into the "back" section at CMP.

CJ at speed.
And finally... Marty finding the limits:

...and hes off. Marty gets a little wild exiting turn 3.

AWD at work. Marty keeps his foot in it, and the T2 Evo pulls its way back onto the track.
Tomorrow: Practice, qualifying. (Race is Sunday)

Nice stuff, Jon. Those are my boys in the GG IXs representing for VIP Garage (oh, and AMS, too
). There's my little man Soap in the tire prison. VIP was my very first sponsor and still sponsors me to this day. I only wish I still lived close enough for them to provide me with track support, too, but I do love seeing them helping out my buddies from the old DSM days.

Yep, Marty and CJ were telling me about VIP today. Seem like they are good guys. All of them together (VIP, AMS, etc) hoepfully result in a great event and a 1-2 finish for the Evos this weekend.
I am heading out to the track at 6am, so I will keep you guys posted.

Day two, Practice, qualifying.

The paddock - no black & white this time.
The morning started out cold. Ok, cold for us in South Carolina. Temperatures were in the low 30s for the first practice sessions. Marty opted to stay off track because he knew how his tires would do, but CJ took to the track.

CJ leads a T1 Z06 in the morning warm up.
After lunch it warmed up to a wopping 40' or so, but wind moved in and it didn't feel like it. Time for qualifying.

Marty on his way to the T2 pole.
Marty sat on pole, and the cloud cover and lower track temps held him to a 1:49.2 or so, CJ was just over a second back in the low 1:50s, and the third place T2 car, a Camaro, ran a 1:56. It was pure Evo domination.

CJ Heads back to the paddock after qualifying.
Tomorrow there is a morning warm-up, and then the races. Group 5, where T2 is running, will be in the afternoon, so hopefully track temps will be up enough for one of these guys to go set a track record.

CJ on track.

CJ demonstrating the multiple uses of an Evo IX: "So you see, if you put your hands here like this after I bring the car in, you will keep them toasty-warm."

what did they end up doing for suspension setup. i remember after the runoffs there was some discussion.
i forget the rules for t2 but is it any shock on stock springs? i dunno but im really intrested on how they overcome the limitations of the class.

The Race

The Evos on the grid before the race.
Cold and windy were the conditions. The predicted wind chill was 25' and real temps were supposed to be in the high 30s. Track temp was in the low 70s.
The race started with a bit of excitement with a jumble of cars not crashing - but at least going off to avoid crashing.

Marty is somewhere just to the right of this shot, and CJ is in back a little.
When the cars starting going everywhere Marty got a good break, but CJ had to back off and lost a bit of ground. From there thins started to take a set, with Marty pulling away from CJ by a little, and CJ holding steady over the third place T2 Camaro.
Marty kept pushing, and you could see it in the rotors as they glow bright read under breaking.

Lets take a closer look:

Marty's pace would combine with his tire choice (Hoosier Autocross compound) to create a problem, and he was having to ease off and let his tires cool, which allowed CJ to close up.

Just past halfway, CJ was able to close the gap and pull within a few lengths of Marty, and it looked like we might have a mighty Evo battle for the win.

Two Evos going for first place.
That's when the problem started for Marty and his grip started going away.
CJ got by him and a couple of turns later Marty's tire came apart, and then went flat in a display of smoke, and good car control by Marty to not crash.
Marty came in the pits, and got a new tire. The tire he put on needed a spacer, which it didn't have and Marty limped in to finish third.

The well-used Hoosier tire.

CJ wins! In his first national start CJ drove his Evo IX MR to a first-place finish.
