PF97 pad cracks

Here are how my PF97 pads look after 2 track days. The cracks seem pretty big, but haven't reached the edges yet. I've been on unslotted centric rotors for my last 2 events FWIW.

I've never seen cracks like these before on any of the other race pads I've tried. This is a first. My rotors are in better shape crackwise compared to these pads. hehe.. has anyone else experienced this type of pad cracking w/ this or any other pad?

I'll keep an eye out for crumbling at my next event. These pads do have plenty of material left on them and should be good for another few events if they don't crumble.

Ive crumbled other pads, but never had 97's crumble on me, the cracks are regular though.

Looks like my last set of PF01's. Kinda scary, but they never crumbled.

What type of brake cooling setup do you have? Any upgrades done to your brakes?

I have the factory air scoops. I still have my rotor dust shields on though.

What are the potential risks of removing the dust shields? I've been thinking of taking them off...

Melting the ABS sensor and wires. To me, the risks of removing the dust shields outweigh the benefits.

Has anyone actually melted them after taking the shields off?

There have been one or two reports of people who have. And given how happy footed I am w/ my brakes, I'd rather not chance it. The ABS sensor and wiring is right next to the rotor.

Hmm, thanks for the info.

I will take a look at the assembly when I swap pads/wheels this weekend. I'm thinking that maybe a modified dust shield would do the trick of allowing more cooling for the rotors but still protecting the sensors...

I saw one of those, so yes, it can happen. However, I think the ABS wiring wasn't tied back quite securely enough (fess up, G!). If you can keep it in place you should be OK. But a nice ducting kit would be the best way to go.

Yes I did, when doing some work I forgot to zip tie one side down and it melted. A couple zip ties makes it a non issue.

+1 ... while replacing my front rotors I was considering taking out the dust sheilds until I noticed how the ABS sensor/wire were hooked up. It wasn't worth the risk to me ... That is why I too am just using the brake cooling guides.
