South Florida Autocross

So I ran autocross last Sunday, this was my second outing, the first outing was back in 2005 then the car was bone stock, this time out I have a Robispec setup and V710. What a difference!!!!!!!!!!!! The balance and grip are fantastic. Thanks Robi!!!

That being said I am not happy with how I did; I got 4th in Street Mod out of 11 and 8th in Pax out of 158. The car is capable of MUCH MUCH faster times I have to improve my driving to match. Properly driven the times could be reduced by a second.
Here are my excuses: - I had bad push from over driving in the tight stuff , not looking ahead enough, and I reached late so I only walked the track once.
The guy who won the class is a great driver and his car impressed me. Competition is good, it makes you improve.

The track is the go-kart track at Moroso Motorsports Park, kind of narrow for a car at full tilt on the verge of sliding, but in a sick when I found that fun!! Really fast course, the first turn (a right-left chicane) could be taken bouncing off the rev limiter in second, on one of the runs I got to third before the chicane (launch REALLY hard and spun the 285's ). You could also get to third after the chicane. The last half of the track was very tight with hairpin type turns, this is where I over drove the car.
First time I have ever 1) touched a corner berm, 2) used a berm for a faster line. Feed in the correction and power and the car pulled out of a slide like a dream (power slide a 4WD car - YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
I believe I need a racing seat, after coming out of a corner I would actually have to "get back in the seat" which took away from me concentrating on “the line”

I have to give a big up to Robi, man the car handles great!!!!!!!!
THE CAR HAS A **** LOAD OF GRIP.
Let me say this one more time
THE CAR HAS A **** LOAD OF GRIP.

Oh well we will see what happens next month

I can understand being disappointed with 4th in class, but whoa, 8th in PAX out of 158 is awesome unless the region is very weak. There is no shame in being 4th in class if you're 8th overall. Hell, that means the #1 guy was probably 1st overall, right? (Just looked it up, and the 3 SM finishers ahead of you finished 3/4/5 in PAX).

In my region, which is very strong overall but weak in SM, if I get 8th in PAX, then I'm usually 2-3 seconds faster than the next person in SM. I tend to finish from 6-12 in PAX, but no one in SM gets anywhere near that...

It looks like you just have a very strong local SM class, but I'm surprised that you were 8th overall with such a great setup yet there was another Evo ahead of you in SM. Is his setup also to the extreme?

The region is very strong, yea the other SM guys that beat me were up top of the Pax -good call call Warrtalon. SM down here is VERY strong.

"but I'm surprised that you were 8th overall with such a great setup" - easy I suck, I need to improve.

Actually because of the work\run group order I didn't see the other Evos so I can tell. but his times a really good so I suspect so.

No, you don't suck for being 8th. I was saying I was surprised you were 8th when another Evo in SM was 4th. With your setup and finishing that high, it means he has to have quite a badass setup, too. You read my comment backwards - it was complimentary.

The other Evo should have been right with you in the same run group - doesn't all of SM run together? If not, then that doesn't make sense.

Are you sure the region is very strong? I wouldn't expect you to immediately finish 8th and talk about how poorly you drove if it was strong. I finish around the same in PAX with 150-200 cars, but it takes my awesome suspension, 285 V710s, and some pretty good driving to finish where I do. The people around me in the PAX are national champions and national trophy winners. If your region is truly that strong, then you should have no shame whatsoever.

Car looks awesome, and like Warr said...you drove well...I can't wait to get my car ready for Autocross...this TeinS tech on this worn out struts would be a joke at the Auto X.
You bought the suspension package from Robi? or he just tweaked your existing set up...which is?

It looks nice, but it also looks way too low.

I thought we would have all run together too, but only the STI (first place) and I ran together, and I wasn't given a choice.

I don’t like the fact that they ran after us, I believe, watching can get an advantage. After my runs I stood up watching those that were fast, those that weren't, what was done differently, how the fast approached and attacked certain corners and it would have made a difference for me had I seem that before I ran.

But as the noob I didn't want to make noise about it.

Also, I don’t know how other clubs run, or how it is done at nationals, but here you run then go back to staging and in 10 min or less you run again. You can forget about making a suspension adjustment, or tweak. During that time the Evo cant cool off so heat soak really becomes an issue not just in the engine but the tires. For my last two runs the tire REALLY got hot.

To compound the issue someone measured the track temp and it read 149 deg!!! Many competitors (all the top guys) had water spray bottles (the garden spray type) I am going to get one for the next event – think it is ok to spray the intake manifold and UICP?

I know where I was fast and I know where I was slow, I also know what I needed to do in the slow sections BUT in the heat of battle I just couldn't apply the theory perfectly - I guess that’s were experience comes in.

Yeah, Purner was trying to talk me into a set of 10" rims (I get all of my Vette race rims from him), but I chickened out--I thought they'd be too wide. I'll make due w/ the Enkei 9.5s I got from Robi for now.

Those fenders are sweet--would you mind sharing abt how much?
