Good job, but out-paxing everyone with an Evo in AS on weak Victoracers doesn't speak well of your region. Yes, the Evo is extremely capable, but AS is probably its worst class nationally.

S2000s, C4 Vettes, and P-cars own us in AS. It would be quite presumptuous to think that no fast Evo drivers have tried AS. We've had one of our best try it and just couldn't do it. We have a few more this year trying and pushing hard (like Brian94ht or whatever) who did extremely well at the SLC ProSolo last week, but struggled this weeked at the Packwood Tour. We have an advantage in ProSolo's, but not in Tours.

STU has some awesome Evos all over the country, and this year might be our year, but I wouldn't say it should be "easy" to dominate. The STis are awesome as well as the E36 BMWs.

By saying you're "going to nationals sometime soon," does that mean you're going this year? It only happens once per year, so...

I, too, muchly prefer road racing. I'd be 100% focused on NASA Time Trials and going to nationals this year if not for family obligations (1 yr old). To partially fill that competition void, I'm doing autocross, which I consider boring, but at least the competition is intense.

Just doing some National Tour events won't necessarily get you the real competitions. I'm talking about the National Finale - the big enchilada. It's next month in Topeka, KS, and tons of us will be there. I think Evos hope to take home the top spot in STU, BSP, and SM. I'll be looking for a top 10 in SM, which will be very difficult in and of itself.

Do you know how anyone faired and what level of prep they used on thier cars?
In reference to?

Patrick, good to hear that you all are paxing well and driving the car well.

That being said, an Evo is not at it's best in AS. I gave it a shot with some custom made Koni DAs, V710s, etc, but it's just outclassed in AS, and it doesn't fit well in any other stock class. I ran mine against some national caliber drivers in ATL and surrounding regions and just could not close the gap. For instance, over a two day national style event, I was .2 off Rob Falkner and .6 off GH Sharp, both previous national champions in Boxster S's. Granted mine was a 03, but even so, I don't think the 9 stands a chance against S2000s and other AS models. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's much more of an uphill battle to make an Evo competitive than an S2000. Evos fit much better in STU, BSP, and SM.

Delta/Cenla are not tough regions. I used to do the same (FTD/PAX) with a stock 8 on RA1s. I'm not trying to downplay what you did, just saying that outpaxing everyone on Victoracers in LA doesn't hold true everywhere else.

Keep up the good driving, though

Devin

How so? Are you talking about the Cenla/Delta comment?

Just speaking from experience in AS.

OT: My CD player finally crapped out on me the other day. The symptoms went away, but finally it just stopped reading disks. PM me your paypal and a total so I can send you the money, assuming you still have it.

yeah , I was going to mention that if you want autox competition, try driving out here a few times.

Either way it is still really stupid about the shocks on a STOCK class car. The rule was created to make older cars competitive with newer cars...but in doing that the SCCA seemed to have removed stock shocks from the stock class altogether - Now ALL of the stock class cars, new or old, require $5k shocks to compete on a national level. Kinda silly when you think about that.

I sure do have the CD player...I would rather trade it for the complete stock airbox setup and stock intercooler sprayer bottle. I am putting my car back to stock regardless of how I do at events.

Just email me your address.

That's a big misnomer. A great driver can overcome a set of $5k shocks any day even at a national level. Also, just because you pay top notch for a set of shocks doesn't equal your competitiveness either. Getting the car set-up right, even on a cheap set, will do so much more.

Speaking of competition, heck just drive over to Houston or up here to Dallas if you want pretty darn decent competition. Lots of National champs and contenders in both groups.

Completely agree, but a good driver can gain a few tenths (.3+) on a good set of shocks on a transitionally heavy course (ie. tours, nats). The shocks on my car really transformed the car into a slalom/offset machine.

Nonetheless, you are correct. Shocks really just allow you to really dial in the car to your driving when so few adjustments are allowed.

The point, though, is that given the same driver on the same car in the same conditions, the car is going to be faster on the best setup.
