Inlet diameter of OEM Evo Turbo?
This means that the majority of people interested in getting into time attack will not have to buy a new set of tires just to try it out. The more you narrow down the tire limitations, the more potential new entrants will be lost because they don't want to buy new tires just to try out time attack. Thats my theory at least.
I say let people run the biggest street tires they can fit under the fenders (without flares or a widebody kit, which are currently prohibited by the rules).
I didn't say they can't afford it, just that they aren't going to want to buy them just so they can try their first time attack event. Besides, its not about getting everybody running the same times and having the same chance at winning. Thats not time attack, thats spec racing.

Other than this, it seems we both think there should be tire limits, but I just don't think they should be tied to manufacturer specs. That said, I didn't really advocate a spec tire per say (just pointed it out as an option...), but, spoke of limits. This should not be taken to imply that every car be required to run a spec tire.
Like EVO8LTW pointed out, the street rules already take care of things to some degree.
Either way, I don't understand the fascination with OEM tire sizes, when the street rules already allow for thousands of $$ of mods...
I agree with Rich, the rules are fine. They are clearly defined and have been for 2 years. If people can not take the time to prepare a car for racing. Perhaps they aren't cut out for racing. There has to be a certain level of commitment with racing.
Perhaps the other option is to create a "Street Stock" class. So not to butcher the existing street class. Then you can have a very restrictive class to try and appease the one timers.

Correct, I don't agree there should be a spec tire.
There is no fascination with OEM tire sizes, its just a suggestion or opinion, like your spec tire comment.
Here's the deal, we all agree there should be limits. The current rules, in my opinion are too lax for the goals at hand. I personally like the street class rules how they are, but I don't think its best for Redline or the sport. Keeping the stock fenders limits the tire size on Evos and Stis perfectly, but for 350Zs and I am sure a few others, they can still get away with as wide as 315s on the rear and 295s on the front, maybe even 305s on the front if they really got everything perfect.

I can say that one thing we are NOT going to do, is make SWEEPING changes to the Street Class. It has worked fairly well for us over the last 2 years, but we're looking to fix some of the little issues we have seen.
As has been said, this is Time Attack afterall..not Spec Racing or NASA time trial racing... so we do have to keep the element of allowing for modifications, and showcasing modifications/tuning, present at our events.
We've just seen some pretty crazy stuff that we dont necessarily want to see in our Street Class any longer.

Granted, it will be a haul to get there, but if you REALLY want to get involved in this sort of activity, it will be well worth it. :-)

We are very nearly done. We have one more meeting this Saturday to go over the rest of the items we need to discuss.
We are also very nearly done with our schedule. Looks like 4 East, 4 West and 1 Championships Event @ Laguna Seca.
Why not have the championship event at a track other Laguna Seca? That way the noise limits don't play a factor in the actual championship race. IMO it kind of skews the whole series when competitors have to run "setup a" all year, only to have to switch to "setup b" for the championship race.

Meeting the sound at Laguna Seca is not difficult by any stretch of the imagination. DO NOT let anyone convince you otherwise.
Also, it is in everyone's long term interest to run one more year at Laguna Seca under these restrictions, prove that Time Attack is growing, that it has a following, with the ultimate goal of sharing the track during the Monterey Sports Car Championships in 2009 with American Le Mans.... :-)
If we bail on Laguna Seca, who has graciously given us a weekend date (EXTREMELY HARD TO COME BY.. just ask Elliot over at Super Street.... LOL), then you can kiss any chance of Time Attack sharing a stage with a major racing event at Laguna Seca, under UNRESTRICTED sound limits......GOODBYE. ;-)
I know this is a society of Instant Gratification and all.....
Just think "long term" and what is best for the industry and time attack as a whole. Running season finale's at BFE Buttonwillow was cool,.....last year....It's time to step it up to a higher level, and Laguna Seca with ALMS is that level.

Some kind of space age powder coat that sucks energy and horsepower from surrounding vehicles.
