+1000000

After I saw the pics when Carolina rolled her Evo at Big Willow in 2006, I swore I would never drive a car without rollover protection on a track again. I immediately had a custom cage installed in my Evo, and my Miata has a fully complaint SCCA cage. Both built by 7s Only at Buttonwillow.

I won't instruct if it means getting in a students car without a cage or rollbar.

From reading the threads at nasaforums, Brandon had a great safety set-up, full cage, high quality seat, Hans device. Think about what would have happened if your car rolled like that?

I'm getting an R3 for neck protection, which is as good or better than a Hans device, and I already have all the other safety stuff in my Miata (except a Lexan windshield - not a bad idea).

that's why I'm selling my evo and my new track biatch has this:

it may not (or may be, not sure yet) be as fast as the evo, but...

need to look for Hans or something now...

Thats bizarre. It was working up until about 2 hours ago. Perhaps someone asked for it to be removed.

I think I read that NASA has the video and they're reviewing it. Not sure why that would mean it's not on youtube anymore, but anyway...

Maybe it's just down out of respect for the driver. It was pretty heartwrenching to hear him screaming/grunting off camera, stuck in his car with both eyes full of glass...

It's probably just as well that it's down. maybe a version with the end edited out will make it back up.

Everyone keeps mentioning he had a good seat...but no mention of what seat it was? Does anyone know?

I was in a roll-over in my rally car last season with a HANS device (vid can be seen in link from my signature), but didn't have seats with head restraints. For the Evo build, we picked up a pair of RaceTech 4009s in anticipation of head restraint seats being required in 2009.

Thanks!

Dave

I have never been in a hurry to put a cage in my car but this plus the big roll in the last episode of Setup has me thinking its just one opps in the wrong place at the wrong time away from happening. There was also that brutal flip/endo at Mid Ohio by the BWM last year as well...

Not sure a half cage would protect me from that much but it has to be better than nothing. I dunno, that was hard to watch and listen to.

I guess I will file this under evolving frame of mind.

This reminded me of the original video in this thread -- contact when a car is already unstable causing a violent flip:

Edit: By the way, this reminds me why being a flagger carries some risk.

Glad to see that he's ok. I couldn't see the video, but from the account in the NASA threads, I can imagine what went on. It's really a testament to modern safety gear.
