A word of caution on modifying your car for competition in the SCCA. Until the full rules have been released I would not make very many changes to your car. T2 is a very restricted class, you may end up having to remove mods that do not meet the rules and that would just be a waste of money. A major change I would do would be to purchase R compound tires and possibly some lighter rims to put them on (again depending on what the SCCA does these may or may not be legal). I have been racing for a number of years and the single most important thing that we can do to our car is to keep fresh rubber on it. Expect to go through a set of tires about every weekend. Good luck.
I am likely to run open class in whatever series I go in - very little restrictions. I am not planning on winning titles, just getting some good hard fun. BTW, no kids, never married, good $$$ job, so that other stuff is not much worry...
Here's what I'd recommend:
Get a copy of the GCR's, buy a tow vehicle, a trailer, tools, spares, and an already-built ITB VW Golf. Run ITB for a year, and get some cheap track time. And run some open track and driving school events in your Evo.
Once you've done that for a year, consider upgrading the Evo. R-compound tires, suspension hard parts, Ohlins or Proflex suspension, brakes, and of course a cage.
Lots of work ahead. But buy the Golf. That's good advice!

I really do recommend you look into race classes before you start working on the car. When I first started in autocross, I had a V6 Camaro with 17s, intake and springs, and that bumped me into ESP, whish is the same class as Camaro SS, M3, Evo, etc. I am sure you will enjoy your first few races in an open class, you will eventually get better and start wondering how you really do compare with the others. SCCA has tons of classes from showroom stock to improved touring to touring and GT, so you really should look into what classes the Evo can fit into, what mods those classes allow, and which class fits your desired mods the best. Best of luck, I am truly jealous, I will be lucky to be able to afford a car in Spec7 or Formula Vee in the next 5 years.
