Front vs rear race pad compound choice
I've been using a more aggressive compound in the front and have been debating whether to try equal front and back compunds. I'm hesitant because of the expense of the rear pads if they don't work well and also because I have an RS and really don't want to lock up the rears. At the same time, I'm accustomed to more rotation under trailbraking than what I've seen with the Evo.
What are others running on track?
Thanks.

I actually like having a similar compound in rear to the front. Even with aggressive pads in the back they still last LOTS longer and I get what in my mind seems to be a better overall performance and power.
Pagid RS29 front, Ferodo DS2500 rear
Haven't tried enough options to know what the difference would be with more track oriented rear pads. Brake feel and balance seem fine.

I was burning up front pads pretty quickly when I tried different compound pads front and rear. I had always staggered compounds on my road race RWD car, so I thought I should do the same on the EVO.
Changed to Pagid RS? (can't remember) front and rear, and the entire set lasted a full season. Pretty impressive since I was going through a set of fronts every track day until I changed. I tried Cobalt's, Ferodo DS2500 & DS3000, Projet Mu, etc.
All of the brake engineers that I know strongly recomended the same compound front and rear for all wheel drive applications.

To top it off they are a bargain next to some of the other pads out there.
I think this is the best all around set up I have tried as well. After taking off the 850s in the front, I missed the extra torque a bit but the 800s lasted so much better and still gave excellent performance.

I thought the Racing Brake pads were absolute rubbish. The ET900 series that are a supposed replacement for the DTC-70 started crumbling and splitting horizontally during a SCCA qualifying and caused an almost very dangerous situation for me. It was highly reckless of them to market these pads at the same level as a DTC-70 because they were nowhere close.
To top it off the support people told me the pad wear was normal and then gave me a bunch of quotes from some HPDEers to back up their claims.

I will never ever ever do business with them again.

The ET800s gave me MUCH better wear and while not as much bite ad the ET850s still performed very well. The ET700s that I tried would have been wonderful on a lighter car, just not enough torque for me in the Evo at high speeds. No problems with heat however. Take it for what it's worth.
Rich, I re-read your post and noticed that you mentioned some worry about the lack of ABS with the RS.
I have never had any issues with the rears locking with balanced pads f/r.

I did not try the 900s but did try the reformulated version the "ET850" which performed very well but did not give me the sort of life I wanted. I can tell you that aside from aggressive rotor wear and shorter life they were unreal in performance. If I were running TA or the like I would not hesitate to use them.

I am sure the ET850s or 900s would be fine as a TA pad, but for club racing they are not up to the task.
