Which EVO for stock autocross class?
Then you don't want to run A-Stock in an Evo. An S2000 or Solstice GXP will run rings around the Evo at Stock prep levels, and the results are out there to prove it. There have been a handful of victories for the more serious AS Evo guys, but I think they would be the first to admit that they have the odds against them...
I can understand if it's a daily driver and you don't want to modify it, for budget reasons or otherwise. But believe me when I say that you won't find a "wonderful handling experience" in a Stock-prepped Evo.
A BSP/SM Evo with proper diffs is much closer to what you're probably looking for.

Where is the "None of the Above" option?
The only place for an EVO or STi is AS is ProSolo. Otherwise the S2k is king.
The RS doesn't have ABS, and isn't 200lb lighter than the MR. I could be wrong, but I believe that the 05MR didn't have the front diff (but don't quote me on that). I also owned en EVO8 and the 9 does make a better stock class autoxer, but not by much.
By the way, I'm getting ready to sell my 06 MR prepped for stock class autox including front bar, muffler delete, shocks, rims and tires. PM me for more info.

Mods in stock class are limited, but those listed, plus the replacement air filter that I forgot to list are all good.
An AS EVO can be a very good daily driver (especially with the adjustable shocks) and is competitive locally. Some of the understeer can be tuned out with alignment, but you can't do anything about the weight imbalance.
I've found them to be a blast to autox. They are generally an easy car to drive fast, and are pretty forgiving (gotta luv AWD). You'd be amazed at how much you can get away with. Also on sticky tires, you'll be lifting your inside rear (even with upgraded front bar) quite a bit, making the car fun to watch for the spectators. Ultimately though transferring the weight all around on the long travel stock suspension takes time compared to cars like the S2K and GXP.

I have to stick with a vehicle with a backseat (you can guess why) so I've defaulted to the EVO because it will be easier to obtain because of loan application restrictions for cars (nothing older than 10 or so years.) To be honest, I'd rather have a 94-95 rx7 and just throw a backseat in it, but it would take me a while to get 15k saved up for that endeavor and I'm very impatient.
In all honesty, how many people say they'll keep a car stock then end up modding the **** out of it. Maybe I'm being delusional saying I'll keep it stock? Yeah, probably.

My first car was an S2000, great handling car, perfect for stock class. Know I have Evo IX RS, but its being built for time attack, and track events. If you want an Evo and will do occational Auto X and are used to driving without ABS, I suggest trying an RS. It took me a while to get the right brake pedal feel at an AutoX. Its more suited for track events.
Hey! Not entirely true. Well, if you look at nationals results it is, but I hope with a different venue this year the S2K won't be as dominant. Hopefully there's enough concrete at Lincoln so the Nats courses this year won't be based primarily on pinch points...
Locally you guys should have fun, there are several NE guys who bought or are buying S2k's.
Not to mention Kremelmeier (sp?) just bought a GXP. It should be an interesting year in AS.
Unfortunately, I think the DC Pro is the only national event I'll be at prior to nationals. Buying a house is really putting a crimp in my racing schedule.

Unless you're planning on going to national level events, ANY Evo will be fine for AS. My RS was competitive at local events, but at faster and more technical events the S2000s and GXPs (see GTLocke13 above
) were way quicker. And if you are planning on using a completely stock Evo with street rubber instead of R-comps then you'll be more competitive in STU rather than AS.

im well wat happened about choosing evo VIII mr to a IX lol not s2k or gxp, but yeah s2k's are nice they handle well but if i were you i'd get the IX gsr its pretty much a 05 MR just that it doesnt have a six gear lol........
I run high speed autocross with midwestern council sports car club. my car is a 03 EVO VIII it is stock except for the nitto's I use to race which has put me into a prepared class. But as you can see from my signature I am the 2008 class champion and have beaten older 2000 era corvets, cobra mustangs, sti's, and other evos in my class. My advice is pick a class to run see what cars are competitive in that class perhaps buy that type of car and learn to drive. Learning to put any car to its limits might suprise you and your competitors. I know I surprised a few guys in my class who have more hp than I.
