AST-USA Announces the new 5000 Series Coilovers

AST-USA is proud to announce a revolutionary line of dampers for the enthusiast and the racing market. Building upon the successful 4000 Series line of shock absorbers, AST-USA brings you dampers that are designed to meet the grueling duty of street, weekend track, amateur road racing, and professional road racing all in one family of dampers. The 5000 Series is completely upgradable from single adjustable (rebound only) to double and triple adjustable versions. For the first time you can purchase track ready suspension at entry level prices and upgrade your shocks as your skills, budget and car preparation grows. Professional level dampers are no longer out of reach for the track enthusiast.

5000 Series shocks build on design principles AST Suspension has been founded on from the beginning. AST uses the right shaft for the right job. Instead of using a "one size fits all" philosophy, each application uses the best solution available. Building on technology from our proven rally shocks, AST uses large inverted shafts for strut based vehicles. New internal Teflon "DX" series bearings actually decrease the inherent "stiction" found in other inverted strut designs. Inverted struts are proven to decrease camber and toe changes in high lateral acceleration turns. An improved adjustment mechanism creates a stronger shaft and piston assembly delivering even more precise control of rebound adjustments. Each of the 12 clicks gives results whether on the street, track or at your local autocross event. All shock designs use modular, spherical mounting points and cylinders allowing for simple upgrades down the road from single adjustability to adding remote reservoirs with double and triple adjustment. Valving changes can be easily accomplished at affordable prices from most AST dealers in North America. 5000 Series shocks use components from other TUV approved models. A well taken care of 5000 series shock can go multiple seasons without rebuilds. All 5000 Series shock come standard with synthetic fluid offering lower friction, lower wear, and more consistent viscosity in a larger range of temperatures.

5000 Series shocks can be ordered for many popular models including Porsche, Honda, BMW, Evo, Subaru, Corvette, Mustang, Mini, VW, and Mazda Miata and RX-8. Special applications are always available. Please inquire at your local AST dealer for details.

More details can be found here: http://www.vorshlag.com/ast_models.php This page explains what we make and how we name the various 4100/4200/4300 and 5100/5200/5300 shocks.

In a nutshell the new AST 5000 series is:
  • High end, race ready suspension that is totally streetable
  • Modular design - Fully upgradeable from 5100 to 5200 to 5300 spec
  • All strut models are Inverted and utilize 44.5mm diameter shaft struts (50mm or even 60mm on some rally applications)
  • Aluminum cylinder, threaded body shocks, factory mounting style
  • Shock may also be inverted, depending on model (example: Corvette, Mini Cooper, VW GTI)
  • 5100 are Singles (Rebound), 5200 are Doubles (Rebound and Compression), 5300 are Triples
  • 5200 and 5300 models feature Remote Reservoirs for added fluid capacity, heat dissipation, and additional travel (some shorter 5100 shock models have remotes when needed)
  • Spherical lower "eye" shock mounts
  • Reservoir with hose or piggyback (piggyback examples: ’08 STI & BMW E36 rears)
  • Spherical upper shock mount assemblies
  • Synthetic hydraulic fluid
The modular design is what most racers focus on, as well as the inverted strut layout.

Here are some pictures to show the 5000 series features...

BMW E30 units are built using your OEM lower spindles with all new strut bodies

The GD and GR Subaru offerings will be stocked at Vorshlag soon

Spherical top mounts from AST or Vorshlag are available in both camber adjustable or fixed style, depending on the chassis

Showing some of the shaft diameters on an AST 5200 for an EVO V

BMW 1 series and E46 or E90/92 3 series available

Miata 5200s built for 949Racing (aka: XIDA)

AST 5100 for BMW E36 - no remote reservoirs but they can be added to become 5200 or 5300

Initially we are building AST 5000 dampers to order but already have inventory on the E36 5000 series and will be adding more models here as we expand coverage. We can easily make a 5000 series shock from anything AST has made before (Sportline 1/2 or 4000 series) and are adding new models and more domestics every week; Cobalt SS, Solstice, and 2010 Camaro coming soon!

Thanks,

AST is building out first set of 5200s for an EVO X right now. We should have them on our MR in a couple of weeks. Pricing for the AST 5100 inverted shocks for the EVO X will start at $2499, 5200 starts at $3899 (doubles with remotes), and the 5300 at $5299 (triples with remotes).

Ahh, thanks for the reminder - those have just been added to our website:

Vorshlag Camber-Caster plates for EVO X: http://www.vorshlag.com/index.php?cPath=72_145_147

Vorshlag Camber plates for EVO 5-9: http://www.vorshlag.com/index.php?cPath=72_73_119

We just made a big batch of both of these camber plate models, fully engraved (our Testers grabbed all of the pre-production/unengraved units). The EVO 5-9 sets are ready to go but the EVO X model is awaiting one last part (the top pointer ring). Those last pieces should be plated and ready to go in about a week. You can order EVO X plates now and we will fulfill backorders in the order they were received.

Thanks,

Your website is light on EVO parts, couldn't find any coilovers.

This post is light on EVO parts - I see no pictures of USDM EVO 8, 9, or 10 coilovers.

Where are the goods? We don't care about BMW's, Subarus, or Mazdas.

Those camber plates seem to have limited range based on the slot size, is there an array of mounting holes to increase travel? What is the full-range of adjustment?

Stuff looks good Terry! Jid, I believe they are jsut starting to build the USDM stuff, thus the lack of pics. The pictures for the evo 5 are going to show you everything that an 8/9 set will look like, as theyre nearly identical.

Damn I am out of the loop. Didn't even know you guys were on evom. Nice to see you offering stuff for the evo. I have watched your e36 build from the start, what was that back in 06 or something, insane! My buddy has a set of your camber plates in his bmw, and everyone I have talked to that have used your products raves about them.

Good stuff!

A few more pictures of AST 5000 series shocks....

The rear shock on a Mini takes some extreme side loads so we now build this inverted with 45mm shafts, just like a strut

Front strut is inverted with 45mm shafts as well.

Optional Vorshlag camber plates and AST spherical Rear Shock Mounts

Inverted front 5100 strut uses 45mm shafts

Rebound knobs for front (inverted) struts are at the bottom, as shown

And how about for a Volvo:

We've had many many sets of 5000 series shocks being built and sold here lately... I'll keep adding pictures as we get new models in.

I noticed that for the 5100 rear for the S14 the tender spring is on the top. For the 5300 S14 rear, the tender spring is on the bottom. Does it matter where you put the tenders? What are the things to take into consideration when deciding to whether to put the tenders on the top or bottom? Thanks.
