Rain tire options for the track?

What to others use for rain tires? I'm going to need something to run for TT/TA events in the event it rains. And sooner or later it always rains at events in the midwest where I'm at!

In the past I've used my street tires (been through several sets) or full tread RA1's the one time I purchased those which were great. Full tread R888's and NT01's don't seem to be all that great. Hoosier rains are an option but seem overkill perhaps?

I had a 2-day event this weekend and ran my very old and hard Advans on a wet track and they were horrible. They're old and 2 of them are down near the wear indicators.

TOYO R1R seem to work pretty well in the rain for me. Pete

Id vote either rain of full r-comps. For TT - you want the most traction you can squeeze out of the day.

If one was to go full tread r-comp; I wonder what tire exactly? The RA1 was awesome, but isn't in production anymore (save for the backlash SM world). The R888 doesn't look to be all that great but could work. The NT01 isn't meant for standing water as you can tell by looking at the tread directions (below).

RA1's:

Full-Tread NT01's:

I actually love Neova's in the rain...I can imagine full rain tires might be a bit better though

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback thus far. I'm leaning towards getting a good sticky set of street tires and use them when there's a wet track as well. It's just simpler as I need a set of streets anyways and I can reuse the same rims w/o another new purchase.

So, in using the stock 17x8 rims, I'm debating what size tire to get. I'd love a 255; but don't think that would be all that great on the track due to the sidewall flex. Wondering about a 245/40 instead to split the difference?

Ive tried the RA1's and the new R888's in the rain... and I feel safer going at a higher speed with the old Ra1s

So I'm shopping sticky street tires to pull double-duty as my rains. Any comments on the NT05 vs Z1 Star Spec in the wet?

TireRacks review last year of the Z1 Star Spec had some stellar reviews of it in the wet vs the competition. I need a tire to use on track in the wet - as well as a sticky DD and occasional 'street class' track tire.

damn i have z1*'s on right now, havnt seen the rain yet tho... but last year i put on BFGoodrich KDw2's and when it came to rain they handled unlike any tire ive seen on wet ground.. im talking pouring mississippi rain... i had to try to make the car break loose... However, i brought these tires to an open track day(im not a baller and dont have extra wheels/tires) all 4 tires basicly fell apart on me lol... but in the rain, thumbs up

This vid (you've seen already) is on Star Specs. They were pretty good in the rain, and they were below 50% life left. The track record for TT-B is a 2:40, not too far off with the wet track and lack of car prep.

Ah, I didn't know that was on Z1 Star Specs - thanks!

Here's what's weird - the Z1 Star Spec is cheaper in every size I've looked except for 255/40-17 where the NT05 is cheaper. Given the Z1 comes in more size options - at least thus far.

Odd....eh.

So what else have we found out??

Just came back from NJMP (Lightening) with NT-01's and LOTSA rain - horrific.... Left early

Need to put good rain tires on the OE rims for such occasions.

If you're considering a street tire for dual duty, check out the Tire Rack test results for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=101

It wet-lapped their test course a second faster than the Dunlop Z1. Doesn't look near as sexy, but when you compare actual performance results...looks a lot better.
