What race tire for 2010?

I'm getting ready for the early 2010 autocross season and I wanted to know what race tire is best for me. I just bought an MR and I'm still getting used to it. This will be my first time on R compounds. Last season I raced an S2000 on direzza Star Specs. I don't think I'm ready for A6, voctoracer v700 or bfg R1.

I was thinking Nitto Nt-01 and I can get them for $715 shipped. They offer OE tire size too (picked up an extra set of MR wheels). But in the end money saving isn't a priorety. Other tires I was looking at are Toyo R1R, R888, RA-1 and yokohama A048.

Q: What R compounds to buy for autoX only. No street driving
--No A6, v700, or bfg R1
--Have to fit OE MR BBS's 17x8
--Reasons why

Thanks in advance for your help

A6's will be ideal. Large selection of sizes. Stickiest DOT R-comps. There was a decent Hoosier contingency in 2009 for NASA/SCCA stuff. Don't know how much of it we'll see in 2010 though. Had a friend test out new Hankook C91's and they were incredible also - possible as good as sticker A6's.

I used a set of 245/40/17 hankook Z214 (C51 compound) for autox last year. Our lot that we normally run on, is VERY hard on tires, so they took a beating. But I've ran on Star specs, NT-05's and A032R's and these obviously slaughter anything else I've ran on. The C71 and C91 compounds are even stickier and I'd love to try 'em, but they wouldn't last very long (at least on the lot we autox on).

The main reason why I went with the 'kooks is because I got a sweet deal only paying $550 for all 4 new tires. Normally they are about $220 a piece in that size new.

I'm not 100% sure what I'm going with this year. Probably whatever I can find the best deal on.

My recommendation? Buy used tires. Lots of them

troll the fs: boards on nasaforums and buy a6's or r6's or r888's or ra-1's (in that order) for $40-60 a tire and learn to drive on r-comps.

What class are you going to be running in? The main "boost buggy" class is STU, but it's got some major limits re:modifications and tires (it's a street tire, 245 max width class). To be more than regionally competitive on r-comps you're going to need 285/30/18 A6's. This is going to require some, ahem, work to make fit on your girly VIII/IX.

I didnt want to go straight to A6 or comparable D.O.T tires. I heard they hide mistakes very well. This being my first season with the MR, I want to learn how to drive it first. I'm leaning toward the Nt01's. Or maybe some r888. A048 are too overpriced IMO

i dont know man, i ran those direzzas my 3 autox events this passed year and i killed everyone... and i wasnt even on 255's they were 235's. I say try the direzzas on the evo cuz then it makes u really look good to pick up FTD on a street tire. And isnt it hard to run Rcomps for autox? Heating and whatnot?

I like the direzzas alot too. I'm planning on buying a set for my type r, but for street use. When I had direzzas on an s2000 i drove last season they performed good but not good enough. I want r compounds and direzzas arnt r compound.

Ahh. the heating issue. This might be a big reason why I would even consider an expensive tire like A6's. Ive heard the heat up quick as apposed to lots of R compounds that are made for road raceing, not 60 sec autox runs.

does anyone have an opinion on an entry level R compound tire thats good for autox?

Yeah, I ran a couple autox's this past year on the Star Specs. As much as I like the tire, there was no way i was as quick as guys on slicks. Gets kind of frustrating. No way FTD on those. Need slicks.

The guys that get FTD on street tires are running in a weak region/area. It simply doesn't happen here where there's actual competition.

OP, don't get ANY r-comps if your goal is the learn the car. Get street tires. They will be better for learning than any r-comp.

Well your question is pretty open and shut. You've removed all the common tires from consideration. Anything else is not going to be fast.
