Stock EVO in ESP!!!
Ran the Florida State Championships this weekend and my co-driver ran in ESP. He ended up winning the class handily and put on a show for all that were there. The camaro and mustang guys were a little upset, so I am sure that the debate will continue as to whether the car should stay in ESP or be moved.
I ran 2nd in A-stock, but lost to Danny Shields who is a Multi-National Champion and has been driving the car (Boxster) for quite a few years. Great comptition to gauge the progress we are making with the car.
It was a very good weekend for the EVO!!!
Well done!
What are you running on your car for tires, etc? Obviously you haven't done much if you are running AS, but I would be interested in knowing anything you've done to the car...

Fellow A Stocker, still trying to figure out how to mod that nut behind the wheel

Sounds like another superior performance for the Evo. What was your co-driver's level of experience (overall and with the Evo) and why the decision to run ESP?
My A Stock Evo won both ESP (my co-driver) and AS (myself) at the final event of the DC region championship series last month. The field in ESP wasn't exactly weak either -- the top four finishers were all competitors at the Nationals in Topeka in September.
And you're right, the pony car guys weren't too happy about seeing a Stock-legal car win ESP -- well, except for the ESP Camaro owner who "borrowed" my Evo and won the event (and the season points title) with no prior experience in the car. He was in a tight points race, and he took his chances with an Evo he'd never driven before rather than run the Camaro that had served him so well all season.
You can probably guess that he thinks the Evo is a ringer in ESP.
All that my car has is a K & N Filter and Cat back Exhaust. I run with 245/40r17 Hoosiers.
My Co-Driver is a National Champ and is a "Natural". I'm close to him, though.
I also have an Autocross alignment in the car. This was the third event that we ran and are still in the middle of dialing it in.
Once it's dialed in, this car will be unstoppable.

I love the smell of Hoosiers in the morning... smells like... victory.

What sort of alignment settings are you running? I'm running maximum achievable (-1.6 to -1.8 degrees) front camber, -1.5 degrees rear camber, zero toe in the front, and 1mm toe-in in the rear.

I hope the SCCA SEB keeps the Evo in ESP. The ESP guys are campaining to kick the Evo out of ESP to BSP, like they successfully did with the BMW E36 M3. BSP has had some of the fastest cars on DOT R tires the last couple of years. My 2nd place at the Nat's Evo hasn't been able to beat the top BSP car here yet.
The SEB is currently debating if the car will stay in ESP for 2004, we need to let the SEB know that the Evo would not be competetive in BSP, and why it's a good fit in ESP. If you want to keep the car in ESP, now is the best chance there will be to voice our opinions. Email the SCCA via Doug Gill, DGill@SCCA.com
Thanks!

In ESP you can change springs, add coil-overs, cold air intake and other modification.
SM allows you to get alot more serious.
The best thing to do is get a GCR from the SCCA to determine what can be done.

Sorry for hijacking the thread... but... check me out...

As the pages states, it was "soggy".
The camber change in the front, along with 10,000 miles has wrecked havok on my Yokohamas. The insides are bald.

Good Job! The Evo is a beast in the rain. The Advans are also a great tire, even when they are worn in.
How long have you been running the EVO? I have about 4 events on mine and we are still dialing it in. I'm going to continue to run A-stock with mine. I have a CSP mazda rx-7 and I understand how expensive Street Prepared can be.
Also, the ESP cars need to catch my stock times before I think about it.
Congrats again

I agree that ESP is easier to win than A-stock, but I also enjoy the competition alot more. It's closer and also more fun to beat corvettes, M3s' boxsters and the like. . The F-body guys in ESP are certainly going to try and change things for these cars in the near future and we will have to see where it settles.
Yea myself and my team mate (blue evo and a silver evo) both dominate AS (and the rest of the field for that matter) down here in FL. The stock EVO is awsome for auto x! We are already beating everyone and turning the fastest times of the day and are pretty much stock! I can't imagine how much better we would do if we were running a tricked out Tein Coil over suspension and more boost!!
