WRC Mexico trip!
Was just checking out Iodine23's pics of the WRC rally in GB and got to thinking....let's get a group of Evo owners (and whoever else wants to go) to attend the Mexico rally in March!
I just heard about the Mexico stage a few weeks ago and am still trying to find information on it. I mentioned going to a few friends and they all looked at me funny. Screw 'em! I'd rather go with some fellow hardcore rally nuts. Anyone interested???

Well....its an MP5k. Besides, I thought you were proclaiming your affinity for Mazda!
I am researching exactly what this trip would take, but I think it is doable. Would probably take, I don't know....10 to 12 days. I'm thinking we all meet up in San Diego and drive down the Baja peninsula, take a ferry over to Mazatlan and then drive SW to Leon. It looks like that would take about 3 days? (Help me out here if anyone had driven through Baja before.).
I'm also thinking that we should do like 2-3 people per car.
Again, this is the very earliest of the planning stages, so details are quite sketchy. Also, I've only been to Ciudad Juarez a few times, never to the interior of Mexico, and I speak about 5 words of Spanish. This is definitely going to be an adventure!

If it's near Mazatlan, we'd be better off flying there directly and then driving. There is a lot of crime in rural parts of Mexico, so it's best to limit time driving around. I speak fluent Spanish, so that's not a problem. Once we know exactly where the stages are being held, it's a good idea to fly to the nearest airport there. BTW, a lot of flights to Mexico are pretty cheap these days. Also, if the stages are anywhere near civilization, a travel agency might be able to get us all a package deal incl. airfare, hotel and rental car.

Chris in HB,
I agree that flying there would be less hassle and probably less dangerous. However, driving the entire distance would be a lot more fun. I really want to see a lot of different places in Mexico, so for me it is worth the risk. Besides, there is safety in numbers. If we can get 8 to 10+ people going, I think we'll be ok. I could be way off though, so I'm looking for any input.
And for those that prefer to fly in, we could all attempt to meet up somewhere and enjoy the race together.

Well, if I could carry a gun there, I wouldn't mind. You have to understand how it works: you are driving along, a truck (or 2 or 3) blocks the road, shakes you down, etc. You say you're going to the cops... too bad they ARE the cops. Trust me - this happens daily. I am all for road trips, but that's one I'd avoid...
I am flying down to Leon/Guanajuato. I looked for some hotels in Leon but they were all filled up. So I am staying in Silao. It's pretty well in between Leon and Guanajuato (where they are having some festivites and stuff). It would be great to get together with some other EVO guys down there. I was looking at a WRC board with some Americans talking about going but haven't heard back from them yet.

If you are planning to drive through Mexico; chances are the only people who will rob you will be the police on the highway. They'll pull you over for speeding and you'll have to pay the "fine" on the spot (also you can usually hagle over the amount of the fine)
