HPDE training

When I ran the BMW schools at Lime rock Park we originally had students out at the flagging stations during the instructor sessions. It retarded the time because of shuttling but it was a great way for the novice and intermediate students to gain a base understanding of flagging, the location of flagging stations and proper display of driving lines by the instructors. I lost my interest when the club wanted happy "customers" with inflated profits. I hope management of HPDE events rediscover the importance of flagging and awareness of the topography at race tracks.

Were the students just observing? Not sure I trust student flaggers and first responders!

Students were educated by paid SCCA faggers and a instructor at the flagging stations. This with class room education by our chief instructor and in car instruction offered the best $105 dollars you could spend. We even required 1st time participants to attend a separate safety school were you received emergency training and car preparation lessons. Now it cost $300+ and its just a lapping day with a class room session. My belief is once a student get's signed off and enters the advanced level there should be no instructor in the car. It's too fast in modern sports cars and coaching would be a better instruction with advanced class room training. I can't believe what work load I subjected my instructors too with no rest and then giving them a run group to drive in? How long they slept after those schools!

I think this is a great idea. Ever since i started doing HPDEs ive always wondered about the the flaggers perspective. Ive thought about it even more when i started racing. Id love an opportunity to stand with a flagger as an observer. The overall experience and knowledge gained would be amazing.
